Alright, alright. Here we go.
In no particular order:
- Kanojo wa Kyou. It's pure, carefree beauty. From the intro licks to the chorus and the solo. It's one of the first pillows tracks I heard where I was like: "Oh yeah. This is it."
- ROBOTMAN. This is one that gets better after you read the lyrics. While the lyrics themselves aren't really astounding, when matched with the song, ROBOTMAN just gets that much more effective.
"Tomorrow you'll be gone/ Who will I rest with now? /Oh yeah, it's a mystery /The flowing tears wet my cheek /So cold, so like a robot I am". What I like about Sawao's lyrics is that he can easily go in so many different places, without being...I dunno..."different" in a gimmicky way. He compared himself to a robot, but made it seem familiar. That's it.
- Liberty (Turn Back). It's mostly the rhythm, Sawao's chords, and his voice that I like most here. The opening few lines: "KYANPASU ni hirogaru shiroi sora/ Mugen no shikakui mado wo aketara"
That "aketara" gets me everytime, just because of how cat-like Sawao's voce is there. The lyrics and feel here are similar to Sono Mirai wa Ima -- pure unadultered joy.
- Sonna Fuu ni Sugoshitai (I want to live like that). For the different, slow, bouncy feel. And the solo, which is just hypnotic.
- Sono Mirai wa Ima. "The rocket separates /It'll burn up just like that /Even God looks away /Crawling in zero gravity /The control tower shut down /Farewell, bye bye, this is freedom". It's driving escape with a killer solo.
- PATRICIA. FLCL got one thing very right. There was one scene where Naota and his friends were riding in the bed of a pickup truck on a summer day on a lonely road. They were just relaxing, Eri (the girl) was playing with a toy squirt gun. The karaoke version of Patricia was playing. Riding carefree with friends in the bed of a pickup in the summer IS Patricia. It can't really be explained any other way. Oh yeah, and the solo fits perfectly, and uses the wah really well.
- Strange Chameleon. Hands down Sawao's best lyrics here. That's all that needs to be said.
If everything is a lie that’s made to look okay
And the cat that I tamed was just hungry for food
Even if it’s an illusion that bursts with the sound of a snap
The palm of my hand is still warm ///
We were fearless and our generation danced around
The page of us telling of our times together was ripped off
We’re going to be another fossil, worthless to history
I’m glad that I met you
Bye bye, I’m a strange chameleon
::swoon::
- Waiting at the Busstop. It's the chorus here, and the fact that live, it can kick serious ass. Again, showing that the pillows simplicity can at times be their best tool.
- Thank You, My Twilight. If you haven't seen this performance yet, I REALLY suggest you check it out right now.

It starts at 3:44.
Open the TYMY lyrics up too, maybe in another window.

Alright, now this is what makes this performance one of the best ever. Right around 5:53, during the last lines before Manabe launches into the solo....
Sawao: "Tokiori dareka ga tou
'Itsu made doko made mukau ki ka' to
Baby, doko made demo!!"
=
"Sometime they'll ask
'How long, how far does that feeling go?'
Baby, however far you want!!"
And then witness Manabe making the solo 10x better by just going all out.
- YOUNGSTER (Kent Arrow). Yeah, I said it. What the fuck are you gonna do about it? To me, YOUNGSTER is mainly fanservice. You know, if up-skirts and cleavage shots could be musical. It's a really simple song, with a ridiculously infectious vocal melody. Add the hand-claps and you're golden. I mentioned this before, but: In Kyoto after the pillows had left the stage after the encore, the speakers started to play YOUNGSTER with the vocals pitched a bit higher, so Sawao sounded like a teenager. The entire audience then started to sing along, and it was the happiest moment ever. I think that's the point to the song. You're not supposed to judge it with the "Man...the pillows just haven't been doing it like they used to. There's not much substance here," mentality. While that's fine, it doesn't apply to YOUNGSTER.
