I could understand someone saying that the early era vocals didn't suck, but amazing? That deserves at least two rolleyes.

okay. i own moon gold, white incarnation, kool spice, living field, and please mr. lostman. the five early cds in a row that are easily available. i listen to them a LOT. the biggest thing i see "wrong" with the vocals in the earliest two cds is the recording/mixing. the drums are a bit quiet, or as Last Dinosaur said "sound like they were recorded on cardboard in a gym" (something along those lines); the vocals are sort of muffled as well. but once you get past that, the vocals are damned impressive. not only in the range of notes but in how solidly he hits the notes. i've been singing in choirs and shit for seven years and even for a good singer, to sound as good as yamanaka does is pretty damn tough. I don't get why everybody disses on the early vocals because they DON'T sound bad. they're clear and easily understood, he nails the notes with great skill, and the tone quality is really quite good, although maybe a bit too far back in his throat (lately he has been singing much more forward in his mouth, i.e. nasal). i just don't get how everybody can say that the vocals weren't good.

Maybe sounding like young-Sawao is difficult.

But instead of a matter of "La, la, la, laaaa, ::harmony harmony::"

It's more a matter of "Wah wah wah, rah, RAHHHH AH-AH- Wahh...."

Hell, even Sawao notices it now... :|

give me an example of where this occurs.

it seems to me to be more in his recent lives "RA RA RA RAaaa" from Strange Chameleon.

what old song specifically, and what's your complaint?

just curious. i know it's all a matter of preference, but i hate it when people just say "omg his voice SUCKED so bad early on!!!"

Guys, his voice wasn't any different, he just had dumplings in his mouth, then he took them out for a while. Now he puts dumplings in his nose.

Well, we all knew it would happen sooner or later: some imbeciles reviewing early pillows stuff.

About Sawao's voice: I would say his voice is a bit goofy up through White Incarnation, but his singing is usually quite good. And after you listen to those albums a bit, you don't really notice anymore. I much prefer Sawao's early vocals to the nasally whine he tends to exhibit now.

sawao himself said it sounded like back in the day he was singing with food in his mouth. it doesn't necessarily mean it's bad singing, he just had a diffrent characteristic to his voice back then.

<rant>

I think reviews are evil. it's essentially a random stranger putting athority over you and influencing your preconceptions about a certain thing. effectively skewing your preference, interperetation, and response to that thing, especially when you might have thought otherwise had you not have been influenced by the review. It may not seem like it on the surface, but people do have a hard time thinking for themselfs. existence is entirely subjective, I think that people should make what they can of it on their own and not be told how to think.

Other than these shit reviews, the only reviews I read are positive ones, in hopes of gaining a new appreciation for a song or noticing something that I didn't before.

But really, I think a lot of people write / read album reviews in hopes of trying to connect with other people that share the same views. (the same reason we come here)

But for the most part, I avoid reviews - Don't feel like you have to conform to what another person thinks about a song / album / anything. For instance, if one person really loves Pantomime and you don't, that's totally cool...wait no it's not

Pantomime FTW!

exactly my opinion. his singing style has actually moved in a straight line:

back of throat_________medium_______________nasal______honking

And Little Busters. The vocals on that album are perfection. But after that...

His old stuff before Lostman his voice was goofy, but it was good.
I still need to get used to Moon Gold.
:?
I thought PML was where Sawao's biggest improvement in vocals struck.
That review link was shit by the way what'll he think of next he reviews PML and reccomends Suicide Diving as a listen and rejects Strange Chameleon?
Also don't completely blow a fuse over it these reviews..
"In a genre where men wear make-up, cosplay goth, and are prettier than pretty, The Pillows seem to stand out slightly. Without purple eye shadow or gothic dress, The Pillows seem quite the ho-hum J-Rock band in appearances. But that’s just on the surface: what they lack in lip-gloss, they more than make up for in talent."
That was the first thing I read. Even before I noticed the anime girl in the top. I seriously want to find this guy, knock him out, and take a shit on his unconcious body. Not only did he do HORRIBLE reviews about the pillows (NOT ONLY IS HYBRID RAINBOW MY FAVORITE PILLOWS SONG ITS ALSO MY FAVORITE ANIME SONG) he did that GOD DAMNED introduction thing about the other J-rock bands.
Dude.. J-rock basically means Japanese rock. Do you honestly think EVERY Japanese person who listens to or plays rock music dresses up like a fucking girl? God damn it. I happen to have a strong hate for visual kei >_>; and that just sorta.. ugh angered me. And did anyone else notice what the sites famous for? "Reviews on ANIME... LIVE ACTION.. MUSIC". The only music I noticed in that review section was the pillows, the rest are God damned fashion shows. Fuck.
Did anyone else see the "recent forum topics"?

"Am I Alone?" Yes, you Wapanese feg.
"Sports?" Like you need a question mark? I mean.. I'm fat, but I can be used for defensive/offensive line in football, Jesus Christ, put down the pocky and step outside.
"Guess that manga."

YEAH?!
WELL GUESS THIS DAMNED MANGA>
