Yup... I had tons of friends that were Japanese. One of them had a brother that had tons of Japanese CDs. the pillows being one of his favorites.
-edit-
It was 1999. I remeber Ocarina of Time came out in 1998. And I first heard them the year after that.

FLCL for the most part.
i knew some band had made Ride on shooting star, but i didn't think there would ever be a chance of me finding out any information about it. (plus my computer was broken at the time). about a month after i first watched FLCL, i found out my friend also liked the show and he told me the pillows mde the themesong and he downloaded it from limewire. a short while later the sondtracks came out and then i went to limewire to download their other songs

Were you watching FLCL at a funeral? Well, no one said that all the fun had to be taken out of a funeral. Because then all you'd be left with is an "eral," and what the hell is that?

So...would it be safe to say that you have to have one pillows album for every album by another artist?

I was first exposed to them from FLCL.
But I didn't actually start really getting into them until after watching BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad oddly enough.

Same here. I bought the soundtracks of course, but soon after that I decided to buy their latest album at the time: Thank you, my twilight. That's when I really started to get hooked.

I've heard of them before, but I didn't get into them until I had first listened to their latest CD My Foot. Then I started to listen to all their other albums and realised how My Foot pales in comparison to PML, HB, and LF.

i think thinliine meant 'oldest' as in 'has been a fan the longest'.

saw FLCL, thought music was cool but didn't look into it until my friend gave me a cd of random pillows stuff that he found on kazaa... well... one thing led to another and now i love the pillows.
