he just has a nasal voice, period. i don't see how singing in a broader range means your voice is going downhill.
btw, he hits a little high section in the middle of strange chameleon (~3:15).
edit: it's incredibly common for japanese people to have crappy teeth. dental care and orthodontia isn't a priority. and they think we're way too obsessed with having perfect white smiles.

EDIT - i've never seen a pic of him smoking though.

concurred. i seriously urged my parents not to spend thousands of dollars on fixing my damn teeth and spend it on food and rent instead.
the japanese are so damn smart.
furthermore, i think his voice is just different, not necesarially bad. i mean, the guy's had his share of bad vocals (*cough* Moon Gold *cough*) but also his good (One Life, or even the recent Terminal Heaven's Rock).
what we need to do is get sato some serious anti-cosby cream.
