Post Re: Rutile - Yoshiaki Manabe solo album 2012.11.14
I don't have to be a fucking zen buddhist and listen to Rutile with a pure heart and balanced chakras and meditate on the true essence of Manabe's Sago to say "Hmm. I don't like what I am hearing. I can identify these things as X, Y, and Z."

Maybe my position will make more sense to you if you know that there is no benefit to me hating on Manabe's music. I'm aware I win NO points for disliking any certain music. There is no incentive for me to cook up reasons in my head Rutile might be shitty, and then casually confirm them upon listening. If anything (and I think this is the case for some here), the fact that it's Manabe playing increases the likelihood of me giving it a positive review.

I don't see what's so difficult or fishy about me listening to a favorite musician's solo record and deciding "No, this is some shit."
I think your position made sense to me from the start. I am not trying to convince you that you should like Rutile. You can think it's the worst shit ever; I literally don't care. I only cared to defend my original post.

I've never been a buddhist, I don't understand chakras, etc.. You see my actual point, don't you?

I still think you didn't give it a real chance, but again I don't know. I'm not in your head. And there's nothing difficult or fishy about you not liking Rutile.

I wanna make this really clear: I'm not trying to push your buttons. I respect and like you. I feel that I challenged your perspective a little bit and your response was more explosive than I expected. Looking back I think I see why. I probably would have framed it differently but I still want to challenge your perspective and it's not really about Rutile.

This thread is basically the last two episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
My point was this: don't try to like it. Have no expectation. And yes: stop thinking about your taste in music. It's not about what you've liked in the past.
If you're serious, i'll take the time to type up everything that's wrong with this statement, but I get the feeling you're less than sincere about it.

No, I get what he's saying. Say for example, you're checking out an artist in an unfamiliar genre. There are different ways to approach it; one without expectations, taking the music as it is and trying to focus on just being aware of the interplay and lyrics and rhythms, experiencing them for what they are, and then there's listening with a lot of expectations and assumptions of how a song should feel and such that can cause you to get hung up so much on "they ought to have done X instead of Y here" that you miss the really cool harmony going on behind it.

The whole reason anyone here is even aware this album exists, is because Manabe plays guitar in a band that we are all familiar with. We know what he is capable of, because we are all fans of his previous work during his career with The Pillows, wether it's old or new material. Therefore it's impossible to go into this without expectations, since the only reason any of us are listening to this album is because we like The Pillows, we like Manabe, and we're expecting a similar caliber of songwriting to what we've enjoyed in the past.

Saying "you'd like the album if you had zero expectations and low standards" really isn't a sweeping endorsement, if that's the best thing the people who actaully like the album can come up with as an incentive to listen to it.

That's not what anyone's saying. It's that there are things to appreciate such that you should be able to listen to the album and say "there were some good bits in there, but it was really lacking and had a lot of flaws" rather than "that was shit."

We've not heard Manabe try and make an instrumental album before, the only thing we had to go off of was Beautiful Struggle. For the most part the stuff on here was less "full"-sounding than that song. Most of it sounded like it could use another couple layers of harmonic interplay before the songs could be called finished, to my ears. I still found things I liked in there, though, such that this was a really interesting listen, and I'll probably throw a few of those songs on every once in a while.

It's definitely gotten to the point where you facepalm a little after each reply. Ah well. This is one of my homes. And I wouldn't change it for anything.

I did. But still haven't listened. I honestly don't have much desire. It's like when This World came out, and I downloaded it. And proceeded to never listen to it.
