The iPod thing, from reports I read of the first show, was that while Sawao joked that he felt almost as if he was doing a pillows copy band, Jun said he really WAS doing a pillows copy band, and had to listen to the songs over and over again on his iPod so that he could get familiar with and learn them. I'm sure Sawao did too though lol.

Heh, well they do have quite a back catalog, so it's gotta be hard to remember. But it's gotta be so awesome hearing all these old songs, I can only hope they continue it when they come here. Here's that setlist though:
1. TRIP DANCER
2. RUSH
3. NO SELF CONTROL
4. WONDERFUL SIGHT
5. SLEEPY HEAD
6. NONFICTION
7. HEART IS THERE
8. SKELETON LIAR
9. SHIROI NATSU
10. AKA NAI TOBIRA NO MAE DE
11. NINNY
12. DAYDREAM WONDER
13. GIRLFRIEND
14. TINY BOAT
15. TOKYO BAMBI
16. LADYBIRD GIRL
17. KANOJO WA KYOU
18. ONE LIFE
19. SWANKY STREET
20. STRANGE CHAMELEON
ENCORE
1.CHERRY
2. HYBRID RAINBOW
ENCORE TWO
1. NIGHTMARE
2. THIRD EYE
I KNEW Skeleton Liar had to get in there! Now if they could only pull of Curly Rudy...

This is interesting. The pillows have been playing some killer sets lately.
I can only hope that their rediscovery/renewed interest in their older work has bled through to their newer work, like the Tokyo Bambi single. Snigz, how was the song? Did it sound more like Ladybird Girl or Freebee Honey? Thank You, My Twilight or Good Dreams?

Maybe they're trying to not only reacquaint themselves, but the fans as well with their previous works. Though I doubt Tokyo Bambi would sound like TYMT. It's a single from WU!x3, so it's going to sound like that (correct me if I am wrong). Or at least pillows history has taught me that they don't normally stray from whatever genre(don't take this literally) they're doing that year. It would be nice if they did. I would like to hear the pillows cover some polka. Or hear Sawao yodel.
Incidentally, I would love to be at one of their coming shows. They are doing killer sets.

Man, I tried to keep the song in my head, but already I can scarcly remember it... I know I liked it, but I can't remember clearly enough to make any accurate connections - I think my focus was drawn in too many directions (listening to the lyrics, the different instrumental parts, trying to keep to my feet in that swarming mass of sweat, attempting, yet sadly failing, to use the crappy voice recorder on my cell to catch a bit of the aural majesty amidst the confusion, etc). umm... I remember the solo being mostly played up near the neck, and there's a little bridge section where shin bangs around a bit followed by a little, not-terrible-sounding, synthesized sound-effect before [maybe] the chorus (can't quite remember where it was in the song, but thereabouts sounds likely).
Oh and ya, and he did make the whole pillows as pillows cover band crack again.
And as to the continuation of this caliber of set list, well, I certainly hope they keep it up to some degree, since the songs are all practiced up, but remember that this tour is specifically for the rocking of single and b-side tracks, which means that their set lists will more than likely go back to their more standard <an-overstuffed-stardestroyer-load better than U.S. tour> fare after the next two (?) shows.

Well I think the fans in Japan have been wanting to hear stuff like this for a while too. I wouldn't be surprised if they kept playing a few of these older songs more frequently.
I'm curious though, what did the older songs sound like? Especially Girlfriend since it uses trumpets and everything in the studio version. Was the arrangement completely different, surprisngly close to the same?

i pre ordered it in september, after a lot of contemplation. i decided for it versus fool on the planet and another morning another pillows, both which i do not have. i know all the songs, i just did not have them. cdjapan shipped it two days before it was released so for a usa mail order i got it pretty early, like the 18th.
i like it, the artwork and booklet are well done. i still do not know if one hundred and one dollars was worth it..... i cannot complain.

well, my memory is already becoming faded when it comes to specifics, but I was particularly impressed at the melodic quality of Sawao's emotional vocal warbles throughout, and i remember a particularly ear-fondling moment near the end of akanai. I can't remember in which song for sure, but I think it was again akanai tobira no mae ni, that they had a pretty punchy little blurb in place of the fade-out.
I guess the biggest difference, as is the tendency for live performances by good live acts, is that the songs take on a new level of emotional intensity when performed live compared to the studio tracks. This is of course true of any pillows songs, but especially in these as, while the album tracks are beautifully crafted, they seem to me to be particularly controlled and and delicate, and well, they don't hold the raw intensity of even some other studio tracks - century creepers or many of the tracks on smile for example.
As for the trumpets, i dunno, i think they just ignored them and rocked the guitar. It would be nice to one day sit up in the balcony for a show someday and just observe and take notes, i think that would provide a different flavor of enjoyment. Maybe after a dozen or so more times mashed up in the front...

Yea I don't blame you for that. But good to hear there were "ear-fondling" moments throughout. I can still only hope we'll have a chance to hear what you heard.
