what he pretty much did was take the stuff that was on a brute and initial stage and take it to end with his work, this deserves credit for sure. what bugs me tough is sometimes when you guys talk about him make he look like the ultimate messianic revolutionary of music.
"Music, as one of the primary artforms, shouldn't take justification as why you like a certain "type" of music."
As art, as classical music is done, there's justification and there is a lot of intelectual work behind it, its not just coming and playing cool stuff.

But when hearing to "normal" music, listening and liking, for me, is what matters more, there must be a reason, but I'm not that good on neurology to explain it.

Right. I'm not talking about the justification of the intellectual processes behind it. Just as you said, "listening and liking"

It's like art. You need to go to school for it to learn if you're doing it right. You could be making paintings and stuff, but they might not be art, so you'd better check.

That's exactly what people used to say about jazz.

Oh, and in case you're wondering, no, I don't like rap.

That's fine, but at least it didn't lack all musicality.

Rap isn't actually music. It's angry poetry over an incessant rythym with practically no melody. To add to the horribleness, it's almost all synthesized. Jazz is extremely complex, and doesn't deserve to be slighted by comparing it to hip-hop nonsense. About the only thing they have in common is, like most types of music, they were both criticized early on.

While I admit there are VERY few, there are a few decent rap acts out there. I mean, the ones who don't go on about jewelry and cars, money and sex and shooting people.

The soundtrack for Samurai Champloo is an excellent example of some of the more musically talented of the bunch, as is the group A Tribe Called Quest, and the individual Del Tha Funkee Homosapien.

The only thing that irks me is how people will literally flat out say that a style of music is 'bad' without taking the time to research it. It means something to someone, somewhere, and it doesn't always have a negative message. In those cases, it's fine. 'Good' music should be more than just backround noise...Things like 50 Cent and the like disappoint me because they get 99% of the airwaves in their genre, and they're also the absolute bottom of the barrel, which gives people the wrong idea about an entire culture due to the fact that they get so much coverage that the average human being with working ears will only be able to find that, be told "That's all rap is" or come to believe it on their own, and thereby close off a little more of their mind. It's like killing off part of your spirit, really. THAT'S the bad thing...

...But, again, what you've spoken of-- The angry poetry over virtually no melody, it sounds horrible and it conveys a disgusting message that degrades us all as a race, but I implore you to keep your heart open to what music is, exploration and expression, and check out a few of the ones who aren't like that.

...Anyway. If you think of it without any bias, rapping is like percussion for the voice. (I wish I could remember who had said that, but it makes a lot of sense.) If backed by a few good voices, without all the 'Yea, yea, uh huh! Uh! Uh! What?!', none of the barking of popular rap...And yes, an excellent rhythm section, it can take you places. I recommend the song "Find A Way" by A Tribe Called Quest along with a sampling from the Samurai Champloo soundtrack for proof of this. The soundtrack is quite pleasing...I was excited when I found out so many of my favorites were on it. n_n

Also, while I agree with Thinline about jazz, if you're as interested in it as I am, I'd ask you even above the others to keep your mind from shutting it all out and going and listening to some of the things I've noted here, as they are often strongly jazz influenced and it comes through quite clearly in the tones and melodies. Yes, melodies. The songs there often speak to me of the soul of jazz being passed down to its sons and daughters and changing, growing. Don't be afraid of something new, but don't disqualify the predecessors, either.
