Weren't the Pillows on Ben 10 but in the Japanese dub?
And Asian Kung-fu aren't that famous because...... well I don't know. They appeared on Naruto AND Full Metal Alchemist. Good songs added to so IDK why. Still great band.
Sawao seemed to just speak his mind and say "Yup I don't like em at all."

Yes, Ladybird girl was used as the opening for the Japanese dub of Ben 10.

Mr. Children is #3?!
Goes to show that bands that are even higher on the chart than utada and glay still can see that the pillows rock! (Synchronized Rockers Tribute)

I find it strange that Mr. Children started up around the same time as the pillows but OWNED them in terms of in-country popularity. Then again, I haven't heard their first few releases. They probably caught on for some reason.

Re: Rivalries?
Most of the groups on omnistry's list he posted are very pop. Japanese people love pop and boybands still. Also, Southern All Stars and a few others are really old bands/do covers of old enka songs, which is popular with older Japanese people.

Re: Rivalries?
Well the pillows are unpopular to the general public, this is true; however, Sawao is the go-to guy for other musicians I've noticed. Where he lacks in general popularity he makes up for by being one of the most well known and respected artists to the music community at large.
If the pillows were to become mainstream. We would probably grow to hate them? I mean they would become mediocre. And we would hear alot of people talk about them. Which is good. But it could also be bad.
I seriously doubt that. Sawao has always written and done what he wants in terms of his music. If the pillows had gotten popular earlier on, the music would have stayed the same. Of course, I wonder how they would have gotten popular. Would Sawao have become "put a boy in a dress" permanently? Would some visual kei aspect have come into play? But other then that I'm sure the music at the very least would have stayed the same.

Re: Rivalries?
also the music sawao does has alot to do with what is going on in his life. His mood and how his life is going has alot to do with the music he makes.
If they became mainstream, his songs would be influenced somehow.

Re: Rivalries?
I really like B'z. They've got some killer rock songs, and they're pretty similar to Aerosmith. Plus, you can't deny the talent of Tak Matsumoto. The dude's awesome. Koshi Inaba's voice also has some serious range, not to mention it's great for rock music.
They have really different styles of rock, and you can't really compare the two in terms of sound. However, the Pillows aren't even close in the running if you're talking about a rivalry between the two bands. They're ridiculously popular in Japan, and they're literally the only Japanese band that's on the Hollywood Rockwalk in the US. Although I haven't really been digging the stuff they've been putting out this year, it's still crazy how much they sell.
