Quite easily; it could be played more skillfully, in a way that better elicits emotion, in a way that was received better by listeners, etc.

It depends on your view of the word.
There wouldn't be any adaptations of a thing that had no original.
Adaptations may be improved on an idea, but they also may be detracting from the overall feeling and idea behind the original.
