Post quip magazine interview part 3!
yes, it's finally done...

y - sawao yamanaka
s - satou shinichirou
m - yoshiaki manabe

manabe-san, how was recording for you?
m: naturally, my experience is comparable to what he [sawao] said previously, but personally, while i've often heard that a self-cover is something where you change the arrangement, in the end you can't win against the original. but it's fun to perform it i think. i had somewhat disliked the result, but to be straightforward... i think it became a really powerful sound. our naive sensibilities of the time have matured, and our sound has become strong; that is the cause of the change- even though we're doing the same song your impressions are different.
y: i suppose if you include zin yoshida, if you include the engineer all in cooperation, all their assorted feelings were recorded. before it wasn't like that, i think. if you think of just the staff work. anyway the thing i can really say is, like manabe just said we can't surpass the original, so self-covers where you think, 'isn't the original better after all?' are numerous, but i think out of a hundred people a hundred people would say it's good (laughs). in a sense, it's a complex feeling (laughs).
yes. so, shinichirou didn't listen to the songs, sawao listened to all of them, what about you, manabe? did you listen to the songs?
m: briefly. one or two times. but is that too much of a preconception? i didn't want that. forgetting is my strong point.
all: (laughter)
s: it's true (laughs).
m: it's like it's a new song!
s: he just forgets the chord progression and development. he has to listen to figure it out again (laughs).
m: to only listen enough to remember it? to say that when we're working in the studio i do whatever i like for the rest? to approach the arrangement a different way, or use a different guitar line, not that way but this way! what a genius! -- that would get in the way of the song. there are many things you have to evaluate.
earlier you said 'kimi to boku to o-tsuki-sama' was the first song that popped into your head. why do you think that was?
y: 'kimi to boku to o-tsuki-sama'? two reasons. i couldn't stand my singing, but i liked the song. because it was a b-side on an 8cm single we released before we changed record companies, it was really hard to get a hold of. if we couldn't get a hold of it and had to do a song i didn't like as well, then oh well. if i'd liked that original take there wouldn't be any point in redoing it. but i didn't waver. i thought, here's my chance!! and that song came to mind.
you didn't think of lots of songs you wanted to do? like 10 more.
y: if we did ten songs, then it's no longer as fun. then it's more like serious mode i think.
how should people listen to the collection?
s: i don't really know but i'd said that about half the people who buy this haven't heard the songs before- they wouldn't have been to any of our shows in the 90s. because we recorded them like they were new songs, people should just listen to it like normal. but there are surely also people who will feel nostalgic...
you've also got plans to release a dvd and a tribute album celebrating your 15th anniversary on 9/16. what kind of artists are participating?
y: a typical tribute album comes out after a band has long since broken up, from artists that were influenced by that band. so the usual pattern is that the people of the same music genre are the ones participating. but in our case, we're still an active band, so it's not quite like that. basically we said something like 'this year it's our fifteenth birthday on 9/16, so give us a present for the birthday party!' to our musician friends, and they said sure. to put it simply. for a normal tribute, it would be people who like us and tell us they want to do it, but this tribute is a little different.
kuhara-san is drumming for the pees instead of shinichirou, yes?
s: yeah.
y: the reason is that if shin-chan did it, it would just be another self-cover.
s: well, the pees covered a really old song. so i wonder, even if i played it would it be okay? i told kyu [kuhara] to do it. i said, in the circumstances, shouldn't he do it? (laughs)
all: (laughter)
s: i wondered, would he do it for me? but i'd already decided, so it wasn't 'could you please do it for me?' but 'please do it!' (laughs)
wow. you were overbearing, weren't you.
s: yeah. like, 'pay tribute to me!' (laughs)
(laughs) did the bands pick the songs to do?
y: it happened several different ways. there were people that we had specific requests for, but mostly not. it's a bit difficult to answer, but basically each band gave us their first and second choice but that doesn't cover most of them. in that case, we'd see their second choice and when it appealed to us we'd say 'this one!' and ask them to do it.
so basically it was their preference.
y: only with mr. children did we say, 'please play this one'. but there's a little subtlety there. since the time that song ['strange chameleon'] came out, it's been in sakurai's [lead singer of mr. children, kazutoshi sakurai] personal top ten, and recently we were playing with them, and, even though he didn't say so i thought he would probably do it, so i tentatively asked.
i'll look forward to it. quip's theme now is '10 years later' - where will you be?
y: ten years later, eh...
s: it'll be our 25th anniversary.
all: (laughter)
y: in ten years... i can't picture it.
s: taxis will be flying then.
y: the future's going to be cool! it's like 'the fifth element'.
s: i'll be able to leave from that window. when i come back in ten years, i just know i'll be able to catch a taxi from the fifth floor window.
y: in ten years, we won't be wearing jackets. i'm already satisfied. i think we're done being sporty. hmm, will the pillows be playing together in ten years? if not, why not? those are troubling questions. would we be together? i can imagine us still being together, but i can imagine us not being together too. what else would i do.
s: be a young businessman?
all: (laughter)
y: young?! you're already wrong (laugh). we'll release a two disc 'turn back returns' (laugh). we'll put a lot of energy into it (laughs).
s: we'll release another tribute album, too.
y: 'will you do another tribute song, please?' (laughs). 25th anniversary, eh.
s: sheena and the rockets are celebrating their 25th anniversary now. it'll be like them now, you know?
what do you think, manabe-san?
m: in ten years? in ten years, i don't think there will be CD media. there will be a different media, and albums will no longer be distributed by record companies, it will be an era where people are exchanging music from computer to computer. and there won't be any need for packaging or album jackets. that would be my guess.
s: we'll have virtual live venues. there'll be no seats. everyone can enjoy it from their homes.
that's no fun...
y: yeah, that's no fun (laughs). there's no physical sensations.
s: every home will have a bodysonic. [1] swimsuits will probably be all hi-cut in ten years. hi-cut will make a comeback.
y: what the heck (laughs).
okay, swimsuits will be hi-cut (laughs). thank you very much for today.

[1] bodysonic is a technology where, for example, a dance floor or a recliner is vibrated using certain frequencies from a music source.

I sincerely hope there will be a 25th anniversary. I'll so be there, and I'll probably have to drag the kiddos along too
