they're more or less the same thing.
i agree with it being underrated. I barely listened to it until recently and now i'm in love with so many of the songs.
to quote my history teacher, the songs that grow on you tend to be the ones that you will love for your entire life.

the first time i heard some of the songs off of smile, i was like "oh, pretty good," but they grew on me. the album that i had that the most with was KOOL SPICE though. i love that album.

naw, what it means is the songs that have deeper meanings usually take more time to really get firmly lodged in your heart. ie, swanky street, fool on the planet, and hybrid rainbow. though hybrid rainbow and fool on the planet were on the first mix i got, it was over a month before i really appreciated them as much as they deserved. whereas some songs like blues drive monster and i know you were instant hits with me. and carnival.

i liked hybrid rainbow and fool on the planet the first time i heard them. Swanky Street took a little time, but not much, before i loved it. I've always like the songs on smile, but never really listened to them. Monster C.C though is a song that really grew on me.

Monster C.C. grew on me too.

I'm not saying I didn't like them the first time I heard them, far from that, I did. What I'm saying is that I grew to appreciate them more than I thought possible. It took a bit of time, but I finally realized just how much I truly liked them.

I was pretty blown away by Smile when it came out. I'd been listening to PML/Little Busters/Happy Bivouac/Runners High for a while, and the thought of new Pillows seemed pretty exciting. It took me a month of two after its release to find a copy (on IRC no less). Upon listening to it I immediately decided it was my favorite Pillows album. That may have been a bit hasty, but it's damn good none the less.

just finished the main interview part. lots of good stuff here! he actually says he doesn't like interviews- guess that's why he never says much.

there's another bit that describes his whole drum setup which i'll do later... hopefully i can muddle through the terminology. o__o

also, i don't really know what shuffle is (other than some sort of drumming/rhythm technique) so if someone can explain that or point me to a good article, it would help.
naw, what it means is the songs that have deeper meanings usually take more time to really get firmly lodged in your heart.
i agree there... the songs i love the most now aren't quite all the same songs i really liked when i first started listening to the pillows, and were mostly of the catchier, upbeat type. not that i dislike those old favorites now, but i've found a few that resonate more strongly. and some of them just stuck no matter what (last dinosaur, hybrid rainbow).

For me, it's very rare that I like a song when I first hear it- but sometimes I know halfway through the first verse that it's a great song. Hybrid Rainbow was like that. In fact, HR started EVERYTHING for me- it literally changed my life.

Usually, though, I have to learn a song so that I can anticipate it. Strange Chameleon and Swanky Street are examples.

In fact, if you take a Pillows album like Happy Bivouac or Runners High, I typically start out only liking 2 or 3 songs the first time through...but by the time I've played it a few times, that's up to about half of them, and after a dozen or so passes it's all but one. The last one usually takes 20 or 30 runs, but it gets there because it's part of the whole album and by this time I'm hearing the entire CD as if it's one long song.

...just out of curiosity.

I think it's funny that he mentioned WHAM! after bringing up punk rock :P But, yeah, it is usually the songs that grow on you that you end up loving the best. But, y'know, I haven't seen a lot of people on this board talk about how much they love the lyrics. I mean, sure, a pillows song can rock without lyrics or with bad lyrics, but some pillows songs are more special for me because of the lyrics. "One Life", "Another Morning", "Strange Chameleon" and "Thank You, My Twilight" are all amazing songs on their own, but then, when you read the english translations of the lyrics, you realize not only how beautiful the meaning of the songs can be, but also how absolutely poetic sawao's writing can be. I just really love literature and poetry, so the depth of the pillow's lyrics are a big factor with me along with the sound. For instance, to stay on topic, on Smile I really liked the majority of the songs for their rockin-out qualities. Then I listened to Calvero and Son of a Beach which just blew me away. Not only are the lyrics great in Calvero, but the sound is awesome too. And, yeah, Son of a Beach didn't have lyrics, but it was beautiful and it was great for the pillows to put such a smooth, low-key and mellow song with waves in the background on such a hardcore album of theirs. Diversity and lyrics and bitchin' rock-out songs makes the pillows really great for me :)

Shuffle, hm? I can't say for sure what he means, but songs like Kono yo no Hate Made feel like they have a very definite shuffle-type rhythm to them.

I don't know if you were serious, but I think Sato was mentioning the sound of the guitar when he said "WHAM" and not the duo with George Micheal.
Then I listened to Calvero and Son of a Beach which just blew me away.
Is "Son of a Beach" the translation of a name of a song? I have never heard of that song. The only song I can think of is "Yaer!".

most important thing you said. i basically agree with the rest:

I think he means that little instrumental thing at the end of Smile.
