Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
Both look really interesting. I was pining for the NGP/Vita for a while, and I think it will have some interesting things to offer with the back touch pad, but the Wii U was very surprising and innovative as well.
Just makes me wonder where the video gaming industry is going to be 50 years from now.

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
The thing that gives me hope about the Wii U is that at it's core, it's a normal console. Better graphics than PS3 and Xbox 360, and gimmicky gameplay can be TOTALLY avoided. A developer could just make the touchscreen a map, inventory, or something really basic. And then the actual controller is supposed to be surprisingly comfortable and light. So.
I do think most of its "revolutionary features" and multiplayer features are a little...well, idealistic. And still really targeted to the casual crowd. The Mii-games they were demoing were totally like...well, Mii-games. Not a lot of depth. But the console itself looks like it can cater to "hardcore" gamers too, just in its design.
I guess it just comes down to if you like the Nintendo franchises, and if any third parties develop quality stuff for it.
Best part of everything though was the spider, and this is coming from an arachnaphobe. Definitely the best spider I've seen in any game. Just looked so damn fantasy-realistic, and dare I say..."epic."

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
I'll split this fuck-huge post up a bit by putting wishful thinking/speculation in a quote box.
When I saw it plugged into the wii zapper, I didn't get it the first few times, but then I looked at what was happening on the tv and it hit me that it was simulating zoom of a scope. I could see military shooters using this for any scoped weapon. With symmetrical button layouts on both sides of the U, it could accomodate either handedness for adjusting scope distance with either the sticks or the buttons/dpad.
I could also see it for third person shooters/adventure games, with the U screen being a dedicated first person view down the barrel of the gun. That opens up great possibilites, as I'm imagining an adventure game with strong traversal and cinematic qualities with a seamless window into the visceral action and accuracy of a shooter. The best view is available when you need it. I could see it working well (or better in some cases) without the zapper, as there are enough buttons on it to do basic gaming controls comfortably.
Imagine online CO-OP uses. The U screen could be for tracking the vision or camera of other players, their actual gameplay perspective. Imagine a co-op puzzle/adventure game where you or your teammate are stuck somewhere. Being able to seamlessly see each other's vantage point essentially puts you in two places at the same time. Player two has a plethora of switches to pull, and player one has a series of deathtraps to traverse. From a safe spot, player one could ask player two to test the levers. Each player could communicate with the other and visually understand the situation as well. But it's not simply "picture in picture", it's a TOUCHSCREEN. You can draw something and have it show up on THEIR TV SCREEN. It's Pictochat!
Perhaps player one is over looking something, but player two sees the solution. When verbal communication doesn't quite get it done, and instead of just awkwardly waiting around for player one to find which path to take, player two could DRAW A CIRCLE AROUND IT and it could show up on player one's TV. "That way", expressed clearly as could be. Teamwork potential can see a fantastic increase.
Imagine what pictochat being incorporated into the game could do for the hearing or speaking impaired. Do you know what that would mean to a speaking or hearing impaired person, to play through Portal 2's single player but feel like the co-op would be a hardship or too difficult to enjoy? With the Wii U, he can write. He can play it with a measure of confidence that he can work together with someone and beat it. That is awesome.
I could see uses in many genres that would be welcome additions. It's not the same as the wii where many things were replaced with motion control, it's an HD game system that takes a lot of tech that's been developed in electronics throughout the years and throws it into one device.
The gameplay demos they had were just tech idea jerkoffs, as Reggie himself pretty much stated. Will the developers be able to conceptualize and deliver truly great uses for this thing? I think they will do very well to think of useful ideas for hardcore games. What struck me as well was that even at a minimum, they could simply use the screen for camera control, inventory, map system, and it wouldn't detract from the primary game experience. I'm very pleased with what they are trying to do here, and the conference was proof that it wasn't just Nintendo high fiving each other and beating their chests. EA was like, "DAYUM, I gotta be on Nintendo's stage!"
And 2012, looks like they broke the 5 year console release plan. Good on them for continuing to R&D for this.
My concerns at this point: It appears that it's ONE Wii U controller per unit, packed with the unit. Are they going to let us buy Wii U controllers seperately at some point? I'm fuzzy on this information, and it would certainly take away a little from my expectations if local mulitplayer can't have everyone utilize the Wii U controller.

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
I'm already planning on getting both. My poor wallet... but I need to be able to play every Zelda and Mario game that comes out, as well as Uncharted.

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
The PS Vita looks interesting. Especially if it had good games. As for Nintendo? I'm tired of playing the same games over and over, even if the new Wii seems much more capable.
If I had loads of cash to do whatever, I'd be interested in building a gaming PC, but honestly I have no idea how one would go about doing this in a country where nobody plays anything on their computers but porno games and shipping from sites like Newegg would likely be insanely expensive. Maybe there are serious Japanese PC gamers out there, but I sure don't know them.

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
I have some extra $$ and am seriously considering building a kick-ass machine. E3 (Skyrim) has inspired to spend lots and lots of money.
on topic: I am also strongly considering buying a PS Vita. I'll just have to wait and see what more is announced closer to launch.

Re: E3 2011: PS Vita and Wii U
The Vita is pretty baller, when I saw a guy demonstrating ModNation Racers and using the back touch pad to raise mountains and the front touch pad to dig holes I was like HHNNGNGNGNGG! With regards to the PSP, I just couldn't quite get into what it was, as I wasn't all that excited to play PS2 like experiences on the go. But the graphics capabilities this time are very impressive, plus touch screen functionality and other applications. Nintendo needs to take this device very seriously moving forward.

I've got to say with the titles falling and falling into place for the Vita, my inner fanboy is beginning to reawaken. http://gamerant.com/final-fantasy-x-hd- ... ts-106250/
With the 10-year anniversary of Final Fantasy X, Square Enix plans to re-release the PS2 hit remastered for the PS3 and PS Vita – in HD.

With the 10-year anniversary of Final Fantasy X

With the 10-year anniversary of Final Fantasy X

With the 10-year anniversary of Final Fantasy X
D; I'm getting old!!!!!!!!
