Uh, laptop hands down.
How exactly would a psp help you in school?

i would either just buy the PSP or save up more money to buy a nicer laptop which would be far more useful for school. those laptop specs are not that great. put it this way - i got a desktop PC with similar specs probably 8 years ago and that was not cutting edge then. technically you can run windows XP but it's probably gonna run like a turtle.
does it even come with any software (i'm gonna guess it's used)? if all you plan to do is surf the internet and type essays i suppose it might be fine.

The only hacking you'll be doing on a psp is either playing Dynasty Warriors or using little homebrews to play ps1, snes, genesis, etc. roms on it.

You don't want outdated stuff. I had to cope with a hideously outdated computer for about eight years. It had 12 GB hardrive space, and it couldn't run .avi's without chuggin like a mother, with the video completely unwatchable. Limited youtube vids wouldn't function without skipping a billion frames, pages took forever to load, etc. If it is a super value bargain purchase, then I suppose you'd be good to go, but I don't know, that model is like, 6 years old. It might not do enough for your money.
PSP isn't a bad choice, I guess, IMO I don't know games I'd get for it, too many racin gaems an shootan gaems, and if I wanted to play those kinds of games, I'd play on the PS2 in the living room. I don't know, I'm not sure how much use you'd get out of it, as I'm not really impressed by it.
I'd say keep saving and get a surefire winner. Maybe you have a potential hobby you'd like to look in to? Maybe your family could use a new household item? Any hax Amusement Parks nearby? :3

darn, i thought you were making a reference to run lola run, but i guess not.
Anyways, buy neither, save up a little bit more money, and build yourself a PC. Laptops really are overhyped, you do NOT need one for college.

You don't need a desktop for college either. But you DO need a computer. Laptops aren't really overhyped at all, and it really depends how often you are going to travel, where you are going to spend time on campus, and what you are going to do with it.
If you're going to spend all your time in your dorm playing computer games or doing graphics/video/sound editing, a laptop would be a shitty idea. Also, if you're short on cash, desktops are significantly cheaper.
If you're going to spend time where there are wireless networks or ethernet jacks are plentiful, or in several various locations; if you're going to commute to and from school often; if you enjoy the ease of mobility with your computer; if you wish to bring your computer to class - if any of these are true, a desktop would be a bad, bad idea.
Anyway, don't buy either of those things you proposed, Metal. They both are utter shite.

they definitely are overhyped where i live (which is twin cities suburbs). Every kid going to college is under the impression that they NEED a laptop, because they've been told they need one over and over. Also, i have rarely seen anyone actually bringing their laptop out of their rooms. I guess if you're going to bring it to class that's a valid reason, but otherwise your college should have plenty of computers in other places that you'd like to go to, libraries, random buildings, etc. Also suggested a pc because his budget looked pretty tight to mention a 600mhz laptop.

I'm assuming it's probably around $200, his budget. But yeah, a laptop with only a 20GB HDD? That alone is almost reason enough to forego it. The actual memory isn't an issue, but as a general rule you can tell what kind of package you're getting based on the memory if it's a laptop.
If you desperately need the laptop, get it. If you really have so much time in your one class and you can play PSP, you're better off just getting a book; trust me. When you have that much time in a class like that, people are probably going to be talking anyway and you won't focus on the PSP as much as you'd think.
I would personally try to save cash and get something better, or maybe even just wait to get something better after technology advances a little more.
Yeah, for college I personally wouldn't get a laptop, but unfortunately, I'm required to get a Macbook Pro. (There goes $1,200 bucks when I could've gotten a desktop with specs just as good, albeit not a Mac for a significantly lower price like Sheer said.)
If what we say doesn't really deter you or you don't find it to your liking, go ahead and do whatever you want.
EDIT: Also 128 mb ram sucks ass. The most you'd probably do in terms of gaming or whatnot would probably be oldschool emulation without anything else open (for major slowdown). If you want to browse the intraweb, have fun running firefox--it'll only take up about a quarter of that at best.
