I just started replaying Final Fantasy 6 for poops and giggles today.

I just played Inindo: Way of the Ninja, and it was an okay game as soon as you got past the droll beginning of the game.

i was playing ff6 advance on a recent trip. i got to the part where sabin jumps in on the boss fight on mt. koltz and you have to do his blitz attack to beat the boss (you can't beat him any other way).

except i can't remember the buttons to press since it's been, i dunno, 10 years or so since i first played it, and i couldn't find any place it tells you what the button combo is. and i'm on a plane, so i can't exactly go to gamefaqs.com.

I've been meaning to play FFVIII again, but other than that I played Chrono Trigger and Earthbound this summer already.

This drove me crazy. First of all it's hard to read the directions, but I also didn't figure out that you 1. press A to start, 2. enter the combo, and 3. hit A again to confirm. You can even hit B at stage 2 if you mess up and retry it rather than failing.

Once you've got it, it's easy, but the directions they give you are inadequate.

As for me, I'm obviously still playing Pokemon. I'd like to finish Castlevania, Rocket Slime, FFVI, FFIII, and Tales of Phantasia, but work is lame.

Ah, I just recently replayed Azure Dreams (I beasted it.) Then I played Inindo: Way of the Ninja, which is surprisingly good and got me very interested in various Daimyos and provinces and stuff.

Now, I'm kinda replaying FFV for poops and giggles, but I doubt I'm going to try to finish it. Just waiting for something else to strike my fancy.

I'd really like it if the De-Jap guys finished the DQ VI
patch, or translated Treasure Hunter G. Also: Shin Megami Tensei If...

Which reminds me, now I kind of want to replay Shin Megami Tensei... this time WITH CHEATZ.

I would play the old-school DQ games, but I really hate how in NES RPG's you have to use the menu for EVERYTHING. There's a special "stair" option in DQ 1 that you used to go up/down stairs iirc. Now that's just obscene.

Video games sure have come a long way in twenty-two years.

Never said it wasn't.

Never said they didn't.

But c'mon man, you've got to admit it's annoying opening up a menu and scrolling all the way to "stairs" or "search" every time you want to do something.

The reason why I like more SNES RPG's than NES ones is because they've got extra keys to search for shit, like the R button in Earthbound automatically talks to people and checks things, iirc.

Because of the menus in DQ, I think that's why the FF franchise grew to be more popular. It was merely more user-friendly. Compare FFIII (Famicom version) to the DQ games. Barring the job system and stuff, the menus were really nice and easy to navigate. It's not that the DQ ones weren't, it's just that I personally think the FF ones were nicer.

But all of this is really irrelevant. The real thing to focus on is finding the patience for SPORE to come out. :(

i kinda felt cool going through the menu just to walk up some stairs.. they fixed that even before the second game in the series.. i wonder what the comparison is like between DQ titles and FF titles, comparing the ones that actually came out around the same time..

i am nerdy enough to do this analysis, but don't have the spare time right now.

Heh, you felt cool scrolling through a menu to walk up stairs? You mein freunde, have "unique" ideas of what's cool then.

But it really isn't necessary to compare DQ and FF, because they're essentially two different styles of RPG. DQ has the first-person perspective allowing much more detailed sprites while in combat, FF had garbled sprites, but made up for it by making bosses and stuff well-detailed and large and vibrant.

As far as execution goes, I think Final Fantasy III honestly was the best RPG to come out for the Famicom gameplay-wise. It had all of the charm of a Gameboy Color game, just without the portability.

Unrelated: You guys should check out this badass NES game called Chronicle of the Radia War. It's like Zelda, but you get additional party members and it's full of awesome. It's a shame it was never released to America though... :P
