Well folks, I went out and got a used slim PS2, out of impulse. I got GT4 but it's not really for me. But I am getting the new version of MGS3. I hope it doesn't have the same controller problems that the GCN version of the first MGS had. Cuz fuck. :|

I never had problems with MGS for GCN; but maybe that's because I rarely pick up a PS2 controller. This new MGS3 is news to me. I haven't even read anything about it in EGM.

The first time I played it, it took some time getting used to it, but in the end, I thought it was a horrible scheme. Picking it up now, I keep thinking I'm playing Resident Evil 4.

Before now, I rarely picked up a PS2, too, but i thought it was a little easier to handle than the GCN version. :|

The Playstation controls have always been fluid and well set-up. You can probably see why they don't translate well to GC.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that this is kinda like the Director's Cut of MGS3. It has a new camera system which I think is an improvement from Twin Snakes. I remember when that game was still in production and IGN was raving about it. When they finally did their review, they gave it a lower score cuz of the controls. And rightfully so. But what puzzles me is that they didn't really criticize it for the controls during the production of the game.

I've never really had problems with the GCN controller. It's been a good fit for whatever game I've played. But I can see the how it doesn't translate well.

Umm...first of all, what problem with the GCN controller? Its essentially the same set up for MGS except for the fact that the analog stick actually has some resistance. You know, so you can like sneak with it.
And as for the playstation controller being fluid, it is terrible for fighters (which is when controllers matter the most). If you use the D-pad, you realize that you are not in fact using the D-pad, but four similarly shaped buttons that are difficult to press down simultaneously. And as for the joy stick; like I said before, the thing is a floppy-bitch: if you press with any force whatsoever, its pressed all the way to the side.

Anyway. I'm excited about MGS3: Subsistence as well. I waited for this release instead of the initial one because it has so much more material (i.e. easter eggs, new mission modes, re-vamped graphics, VR missions, and online play) plus new camera angles that make the game significantly less frustrating. If you pre-ordered it early enough/are lucky, you get bonus disks with the game, like a history of MGS DVD.

I didn't pre-order the Limited Edition. Not that I care anyway.

And yeah, the game is pretty cool.

I don't think it's that bad for fighters.. GCN is undoubtedly the worst in that category.

I just don't like the way the GC controller feels with MGS. I've been playing it on the PS since before 2000, so switching feels weird. Mainly I'm referring to item selection though, which is hard with those stupid retarded shoulder buttons.

As for this:

I was talking about MGS's control scheme, not the PS2 controller.

yep, but mostly because of the assimetrical button design, I like the cross d-pad over the ps one, but they're both playable. For the best home console controller for fighting games: neogeo cd. (I'm not taking into account crappy 3d games).

I see what you're saying. I'm overly defensive of Nintendo. You could've said "I really like the taste of milk." and I would've responded, "No way man! Have you ever played donkey kong country 2? Nintendo's milk is way better."

Apparently the limited edition pack is worth a decent amount now. But I refuse to sell it.
