So I just bought myself a new Dell laptop; and I wanna find a good software program that'll let me play my Region 2 DVDs. Any suggestions?

Couldn't. College only supports Dell. But hey, so far it works great.

Do DVD ROM owners actually need to dl "hacks" to use other region DVDs?

I couldn't just order a DVD from Japan and play it in my DVD rom right off the bat?

Probably not. It might depend on the playing software, but overall, no.

I tend to rip and burn DVDs, since I rarely buy them since I'm broke. And that process eliminates the region coding, so I pretty much get around that problem by default.

maybe. some drives allow you to switch regions a limited number of times before it becomes 'stuck' in a particular region. the reason you may want to hack it is to allow the switch whenever you want. i just left my drive as region 2; if i want to watch north american dvds i'm going to watch them on the tv anyway.

That's how my DVD-ROM works. I tried some of that software you guys recommended; but they didn't work. So does anyone else have any recommendations?

If you have a liteon drive, there's a nice little program that lets you edit the region settings and the number of changes remaining.

If your comp is stuck on Region 2, does this only affect the DVD p[alyer, or the all around reading of discs....like CD's, gaems, programs, etc...
