Looks like a bunch of nonsense tags people use to get themselves in google searches.

Uh... no? I still read manga because I like the deeper stories and the artwork.

You read comic books for a deep storyline?

Read some seinen, sheer! I recommend* Anne Freaks and Eden (that is, if you even read manga).

To be fair, some graphics novels have been able to portray pretty steep plot lines... though if you really want depth, prose is best.

Anyways, whenever I see this thread, I can't help but think of this:

Wait for the girl about 12 seconds in... "manga!!!"

MANGA:

20th Century Boys
Monster
Pluto
Blackjack
Buddha
Beck (shush!)
A Drifting Life <- This is a must read.

And lots of comic books have deep plots. You should all read Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud. It's probably the smartest thing I've read in a while. He makes a fantastic argument for it to be an equal medium to literature, movies, etc.

Manga is widely read in Japan. There really is a manga for just about any kind of person, so any dismissive statements about the medium clearly betray simple ignorance.

Finished reading I''s yesterday. I shamelessly love it, and it is hands down my favorite series of the genre.

There's a new GTO series called GTO: Shonan 14 Days, and it's pretty much win if you like that kinda thing.

Depends. If you're Brye, then sure. However, one can dismiss an entire medium if there are shortcomings that are completely at odds with the individual's values. Comics, just as any other medium, are inherently limited in some respects, and adequate in others. It doesn't matter how popular they are in Japan, it doesn't change these facts.

Shortcomings? Ok so like... you could dismiss it outright because your values are at odds with... images and text?

How is it rubbish? Coulda fooled me into thinking it was a top-notch seinen manga.

You honestly don't understand how each medium can be intrinsically limited in nature in some respects, while adequate in others? I would explain, but it sounds like you're being willfully ignorant. However, later, if you still can't figure it out, I'll try to help you out.
