Re-reading 1984, just read Animal Farm recently as well as Island by Aldous Huxley. Next is probably some Dostayevnskseykuysekyrsky.

Thinking about picking up Steven Pinker's The Language Instinct. It seems interesting and I've heard a lot of good things about it.

Just about everything Pinker's ever written is intriguing, especially if you're into linguistics (I am). I got kind of lost while reading The Stuff of Thought, though...

I can really use a Murakami novel right now.
From his twelve novels so far, the only ones I haven't read are 'Hear the wind sing', 'Pinball, 1973' (his first two novels) and 'Sputnik Sweetheart'.
I'll get Sputnik Sweetheart tomorrow.

I'm currently reading Conrad's 'The secret agent', I'm half way but I can't really get through it.
I'm also reading 'Demanding the Impossible: A History of Anarchism'. (Peter Marshall)

Sputnik's pretty good, and the one I'd recommend out of the three. There's one long section in the middle that I found fairly frustrating to read though... maybe you'll feel differently.

At any rate it's leagues better than South of the Border, West of the Sun. Can we all agree that that novel is kind of shitty for Murakami?

It's been so long since I read it, but I remember enjoying most of it. Not a standout, though.

Still on the waiting list for 1Q84 at the library.

Continuing a fantasy/sci-fi kick, just got done with 'Wise Man's Fear'. Meandering but entertaining except for the minor bit of idiocy where an ethnic group believes women just randomly get pregnant sometimes. I'm no anthropologist but I'm pretty sure that's ludicrous, even for a fantasy novel.
Sputnik's pretty good, and the one I'd recommend out of the three. There's one long section in the middle that I found fairly frustrating to read though... maybe you'll feel differently.
Yeah, one passage reminded me of the song 'Carnival'.
"Passing the time alone on a ferris wheel
Looking down at the world I hate"

The book was okay, typical Murakami. Maybe a bit too typical. Yeah, the section in the middle was a bit flawed maybe.
I enjoyed the book, but it was rather short. Too short actually to have a lasting impact.

Nietzsche looks at morality coldly and objectively to a degree that I've never known anyone to come close. If you are interested I recommend Beyond Good and Evil.
