Post Re: What are you playing?
Haven't played any vidya for a few months. Looking for something new to play. My wife wants us to get into WoW, but I'm not sure. I played a free trial a few years ago and enjoyed it, but it's a pretty time-consuming game and I'm not sure I have the time to spare. Does anyone here still play it/ know anyone who plays it? I'm kinda on the fence.
I haven't played in over 2 years so some things have surely changed, but before I left they were doing things to make it easier to upgrade gear at max level without being in an organized raiding guild, you just wouldn't be able to get the nicest gear right away. The addition of daily quests also made it easier to farm money. So it seemed to be getting friendlier towards players that didn't want to be so dedicated. I vaguely recall hearing about some new thing where you're guaranteed to get gear from bosses that's usable for your party, which would also make things easier.

I've been interested in Ni no Kuni, it looks awesome. But, while I know the price has gone down and the HD space has gone up, I still don't feel like forking over $300 for a console that's now relatively old.

Eh, I'd pass on the whole MMO scene for now. It's pretty stale. WoW is devolved into a borderline baby game. You level up entirely too fast now, and the only thing you have to look forward to is sitting in Orgrimmar/Stormwind waiting in a random heroic queue. Gearing up at max level is fun for a bit until you're geared for heroic raids. At that point you realize your guild sucks and can't do heroic 10 man. Then you roll another character to get him geared for the sake of having something to do.

LOL, I remember that strip. Is killing wolves and stuff really that addictive? I've known a few people who have gotten super-addicted, but others who have played casually for a long time. An MMORPG sounds like fun, but like Aplaca said, the scene seems a little stale.

Still on the fence about it, but I'm putting it off for the time being. My Macbook is getting pretty old. I should probably pick up a new computer before playing any computer games.

The addictive part is running the dungeons over and over for the chance to get new shinies which are better than your current shinies so you can run even harder dungeons and get better shinies and... And there's PVP but that's a whole 'nother can of worms.

To me half of it is really the social aspect, if you have friends that play it can be a fun way to hang out. But, certainly there are plenty of other online games that could be played socially.

WoW is definitely the funnest when you get with a couple friends on Skype and run around goofing off. It honestly becomes a different game. Life happens though, so within my circle of friends the window of time in which we all are subscribed AND interested in playing is tiny. Probably a couple months during the summer every other year. Friends make and break MMOs for me.

Post Re: What are you playing?
I love the shit out of the Warcraft universe. Been playing WoW since BC, but was into Warcraft since I first watched my cousin play Orcs and Humans, eventually starting on my own with Warcraft II's battlechest. I've loved the game throughout in its various forms (although there's been flaws at all stages,) the community is/was pretty decent if you looked hard enough for good people (especially on roleplay servers,) and the lore is pretty interesting.

That being said, if you're looking to get into an MMO, I'd say pass on WoW unless you know some people who already play and have a guild you can join. At this point, the game has been out for so long that it's pretty damn hard trying to get into a new guild with people who have known each other for practically a decade. It's like IM, pretty much. We know Mare, Jomei, Metal, Sheer, etc. but if anyone new comes around, it's kind of tough to break into an already established community. Not that it's not possible, but it'll take more hardwork than leveling up will.

Although, now that I think about it, that's more the raiding and PvP guilds anyway. If you were to just join a leveling/social guild, you'd probably at least make a few friends.

The game itself only takes up as much time as you want to put in. You level pretty damn fast now. They've made questing much more interesting (to the point where Burning Crusade's content, which used to be the more fun content, has become the boring content.) You can level up by just doing dungeons or just doing PvP once you get to those levels, too, and PvP is going to have some big changes coming up to make it a bit easier to do in the lower levels. Since the last expansion was released, WoW is very friendly to the casual player. Probably moreso than any other MMO.

Thank you! I'm actually not very good--just persistent. You should see me trying to complete Hyper Hexagonest :dizzy: Don't even think my high score is 30.00s yet.

Edit: it's 36.xx now and I'm starting to see hexagons everywhere.

Just started playing La-Mulana from the WiiWare shop, it's pretty fun so far.

Been slowly getting through Borderlands 2 here and there on the weekend, playing the occasional bit of CS:GO still.

I've been playing Dragon Quest VII on 3DS. It's fantastic and improves on the (excellent but unattractive) original in every way.

I recently got an iPhone and I've been playing ZiGGURAT, TNNS, and Canabalt a lot. I really enjoy these games of trying in vain to escape your inevitable doom that take no more than one or two minutes at a time.

Ok, I'm upgrading my comment about La-Mulana to "HOLY FUCK THIS GAME IS RAD!" Any screen you haven't yet seen could have the solution to one of the numerous currently unsolved puzzles and unopened chests you come across. The answer could be in an entirely different hub world. (Maybe two!) You can have access to a boss but have no way to realistically kill it without the proper equipment. There are clues to puzzles you probably won't see for several hours of gameplay, suggesting that you actually TAKE NOTES so you don't have to waste time backtracking. Great music.

Play this game. ^_^

:progress update:

"That water level" was surprisingly easy, it's "That ice level" that is currently busting my balls. Annoying bastard enemies and ice physics always spell trouble in platformers. I've come to the conclusion that it must be the next step because all the other hub worlds I've explored seem to require stuff I don't have, like some kind of bomb or torch, or some kind of wall climbing tool. Process of elimination.

I was reading a forum thread about this game, and while I can see where they are coming from having trouble with the more obtuse puzzles and aggressively non-linear progression, I can't take them all too seriously when I see them complaining about puzzles in the first level. The first level is bread and butter stuff: invisible floors, reading symbols to determine order, push all the buttons, etc. Git gud, scrub. 8)

The bosses are awesome but quite challenging. Even if you have a sub weapon that can hurt it reliably, they still have a respectable pool of health. You need to play very well to win. I did hear one boss is a total asshole so yeah, not looking forward to that one.
