I really hate Hemingway. I'm a book nerd, but I just didn't like Old Man and the Sea or A Farewell to Arms. They were both rife with unneeded symbolism.

btw I never read anything Murakami. What do you recommend?

Anything, really.

Still reading Kenzaburo Oe short novels, but also started The Abortion by Richard Brautigan today. I read those during breaks at work, and when at home I've been reading Hard-Boiled Wonderland and the End of the World by Murakami, and it's awesome as of half-way through.

I hear from my more bookish friends the same thing about some hemingway. The writing is so intellectual that it can get to you when you take a step back and realize that nothing is actually going on. That might be just my interpretation of what they're saying. I've never read him personally, but I dont think I want too.

Right now I'm reading Kitchen Confidential. If you know the industry/craft it's an amazingly hilarious book.

My favorite book of all time is On The Road. I loved it, however, when I went into Dharma Bums, it was really good. But didnt stick with me as well as On The Road did.

I'll go back to Kerouac one day but I got Nasty Bits too look forward too after Kitchen Confidential.

I need to start The Dharma Bums again, thank you for reminding me of that. Anyway, it's really good if you're into Buddhism/know a bit about Buddhism. Plus, it's just interesting to me, haha. I dig it. Though, I agree with the On the Road thing. On the Road is just an amazing novel and is probably my favorite.

Hemmingway was one of those authors that I just despised all through high school. In ninth grade, Old Man and the Sea was like the only book we didn't act out in class (we did Romeo and Juliet and the Crucible, and I was Romeo and the guy that dies at the end of the Crucible hahaha all girls school). So I hated it because it was so completely boring. Also, Death Of a Salesman was one of the most monotonous screen writes I ever had to read during class.

I finally started reading Dune at the beginning of the week after putting it off for ages, and it's amazing. I'm about 3/4 of the way through now, haven't been reading too much, but it's definitely one of the best books I've read in years.

I'm reading Dark Tower IV: Wizard and Glass by Stephen King. The year V, VI and VII came out, I read through I-V in quick succession and sort of burnt myself out, so I'm starting over and working through them again. Hopefully I'll finally get to VII and finish the thing.

I also picked up that Audacity of Hope book by Obama, haven't started it yet.

On that note, my boyfriend is making me read George R.R. Martin's A Game of Thrones. It's okay but I honestly haven't been into fantasy much after going on that I <3 MERLIN phase back in seventh grade hahaha. Since every book tried to be Harry Potter after that and I despise HP! (Yes, I did read the first book and it just wasn't... good in my opinion). All my boyfriend reads is Star Wars books though. XD

I literally have that sitting right in front of my keyboard. A coworker just lent it to me, though I won't get to it for a while.

tl;dr
261 pages in and about a 5th of the way done. Really enjoyable book, though. It's not like she stretched out the subject matter or anything, it's just a lot of story.

George R. R. Martin's stuff is a far, far cry from HP. o.O

I started reading Robert Jordan (Knife of Dreams) again and it feels like he's been dragging stuff on way too long. >_<

Yeah I know, but a lot of fantasy set for young adults (the period of time when I was reading fantasy novels) was HP clones. :O early 2000s'. yknow.
