 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Metagross, when set up right, only gets OHKO'd by super effective moves like a good fire hit or an EQ. In addition, if you run Meteor Mash and Bullet Punch like Jolmes does, you take the first hit, SLAM them hard, then finish them off with a priority move. I'm running an Agility set though. I use Agility once and then I no longer have to worry about being slow because I outspeed pretty much everyone else after that, after which it's POUND POUND POUND.

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Who Earthquakes against Bronzongs? Yeah, the immunity is nice for switching in, but we covered that already...
Also, Metagross is really in a middle speed tier at 70 base. He outspeeds most of what could be described as the "slow" tier (Bronzong, Swampert, Hippowdon, etc.) He's slower than many Pokemon, but he also has a solid 80 base HP stat, a huge 130 defense, and a respectable 90 base special defense. Even with an agility-sweeping EV spread like Mare uses, Metagross should be able to survive most non-super-effective attacks, even stabs. With HP EV investment, my Metagross frequently survives even STAB Earthquakes.
And, well, the comparison of Lucario to Metagross is silly. Of course Lucario is a better sweeper. Quite possibly the best in the game. But this is apples to oranges again. My team uses Metagross to lead, often taking out sleep and suicide leads, Swampert and Zapdos to take hits and counter threats, Gyarados to mid-game sweep and take out Ape's counters, Flygon to scout, revenge kill, or sweep, and Infernape to mop shit up, ideally. Lucario is a great Pokemon, but he would make a terrible substitute for Metagross, and he doesn't cover the same things Infernape does, which would leave my team much more vulnerable to physical walls, in this case. Moreover, to be most effective at sweeping, Lucario needs a turn of set-up, whereas my team is set up to weaken the opponent to a point at which Infernape can come in and start to blow through things without setting up.
[/long post]
tl;dr version: Metagross is great, but of course he doesn't beat Bronzong and Lucario at their own games. They serve totally different roles, and so far Metagross fits my team well.

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Thank you gentlemen, I appreciate your schooling of me in the Pokey arts, I now know more about Metagross and its practical usage.
It doesn't fit my style of play, but that's still coo'.

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
And that's the only thing that matters.
I'm trying to branch out and explore different pokes and whatnot lately. My ingame team on Plat is entirely different from the team I rolled with in Pearl, and it's actually kicking way more ass. I've gotten a lot better since I first got back into it, so it's pretty interesting to see how much better I've gotten at just tossing a team together that covers most of the bases pretty well.

Well you're trying out different shit, I am too. You just happen to have not tried out as badass teams as you have. ;D

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
0-3. Not exactly owned, but yeah, that match didn't go so well. If that Bullet Punch had finished off Crobat right at the beginning, I'm pretty sure I would have won, though. Machamp would have fucked shit up if not for that sliver of HP.

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
If Ape hadn't have flinched, you could have probably turned it around there as well, and yeah, that Crobat baaaaaaaaaarely surviving sucked a ton. lol @ Machamp's Close Combat

 Re: Pokemon Diamond/Pearl
Honestly, if that Crobat had died and Infernape not flinched, I probably could have won the whole tournament. OH WELL.
