It's weird, and hard to use.

Any OS will be wierd and hard to use if you're not used to it. That's an argument I've heard against both Windows and the MacOS from opposing parties many times.

Linux is still a bit rough around the edges - not quite ready for someone who's not really great with computers or who isn't that intuitive about them. You can find some distros that are pretty user-friendly, but you'll still probably find yourself typing commands into a console sometimes.

True, operating systems are "different". But some are much more limited then others. I'm not saying that Linux is inherently bad...but. Come on, you know what I mean.

Jomei, if you're only looking to use the internet, do some word processing, and watch young women get sexy on themselves, then I guess Linux MIGHT work. If you're willing to set it up and learn another OS.

Heh. We Mac hardcore haven't had much time to build up our instincts and defenses to the dangerous world that is the internet. If you don't have the right protection on Windows (and you do dangerous things), then you really gotta walk on eggshells. Tip toe. And avoid stuff. and play it super safe.

Linux is about as limited as the Mac in terms of software compatibility.

Basically I need Word, iTunes, Soulseek, IM-ing, and internet. And a video player doesn't hurt.

i'm with joyeuse- i wouldn't even consider linux for what jomei wants to do. it just requires much more tinkering and configuring without significant gain in this case.

I've never had to play it safe in windows. tiptoe and all that stuff. Honestly, without starting any argument, I think both are more than adequate to handle whatever. With vista coming out and stuff both will pretty much be pretty good. And XP isn't bad at all.

there is no learning... all operating systems act the same. it's like how there is no spoon. a lot of technophobes get scared when they see linux in front of them but don't realize that the start menu is most likely in the same place and functions in the exact same way...

there is a slight hurdle with respect to like.. drivers... but that's because a lot of drivers had to be hax0red into existence because companies won't release drivers for linux 90% of the time.

COUGHCOUGHDOWNLOADWINDOWSCOUGHCOUGH

also, if you know what you're doing, all software for linux will run on a mac, and you wouldn't want to run any software from a mac on linux. but out of the box, i'll have to agree with joyeuse because i'm a big fan of package management.

I'm so confused. My laptop has been running slightly better lately... maybe some of that anti-spyware/virus stuff I installed is working...?

Actually, yes. There are equivalents for almost everything under Linux, people just say that it doesn't have as much software because they're not the big name packages. But Linux is pretty limited when it comes to games, just like the Mac.
