Edit: Sheerheart, what exactly do you mean by "That said, if you know your way around the technological world, you'll probably get a hell of a lot more out of a PC." ....what constitutes 'a hell of a lot more' for you?
Essentially, I would consider hardware upgradability a very important aspect to tech-savvy persons. In fact, you never really hear the end of those technophiles talking about how they built their computer from the ground up, or how they have more RAM than a Dodge truck, with a video and sound cards to match, with twenty speakers that could outperform a Marshall stack. Also, as your machine falls behind the times, you can inexpensively extend its life by upgrading, rather than buying a new machine. I will confidently say that most computer users, however, will probably never open up their machine.

A general, but not necessary, quality of technophiles is their love for computer games. Now, until recently, if you bought a Mac, you weren't playing computer games. I understand now that you can run Windows on a Mac, but it's still Windows (although that is pretty sweet).

Essentially, Windows does everything, and a Mac does some things, but uses Windows to fill in all the holes. Seriously, just pick one; you can't really go wrong. If you're an idiot, I suggest the Mac, because you will probably badly fuck up a Windows PC.

-Tech savvy =/= needing upgrades. Hardcore gaming requires upgrades. High-end sound and video editing requires upgrades. Thankfully, Macs usually excel at both of the last two, so it's not a problem. You can upgrade the RAM, harddrive, and sometimes the video card. What else would you need to upgrade? Not the power supply. You don't really need to swap out the mobo. Having a swappable CPU would be nice, I admit. But it's not a necessity.
*Keep in mind that extremely tech savvy people don't need expensive equipment. Leo Laporte. Hackers. Coders. Kevin Rose (digg.com) prefers Mac OS X over Windows.
It's not a "If you are above this line: ------- use a PC" sort of deal.

A Mac would be more suitable for a computing novice, yes. It's not as easy to fuck them up. Maybe I'm reading into this too much, but I'm getting the vibe that you think complexity/difficulty/steeper learning curve is something good.

One last bit: "A Mac does some things". True that. There are fewer Mac-based programs than ones developed for Windows. But the programs that may Macs stand out: your Photoshop, Final Cut, etc....are done really well, and generally will yield better performance than when run on a PC.

Norton Antivirus is horrible, I despise it. AVG is pretty sweet.

The clicking noise (since you didn't give us anything more to go on besides that) could probably be your hard drive. Run a disk check and repair program, maybe do a defragment. I've had drives do that before and while they've lasted for quite awhile after that, it was always a harbinger to their impending demise.

Okay, I was just sitting here looking at some old poasts with butter, and I was wondering  about something with wifi connections.

It's more of a no-brainer, but I want confirmation without lookingshitup, so I'm asking here:

If you took a laptop to a wifi hotspot, could the wifi hotspot ban certain shit, like soulseek and bit torrent?

right, blame the metronome for being off-time.. 8)

anyways, this is how the internet works:

for wifi, i assume they suspend them somehow. perhaps this is a wifi connection:

they can restrict or not allow traffic through certain ports, yes. torrents use a certain range of ports... slsk uses other ones, the internet uses others, ssh uses others... you get the picture.

and yes the metronome was off, unless when we switched to cubase, the new metronome could READ MY MIND. OMG I THINK YOU'RE RIGHT! ALL PRAISE CUBASE.
