Edit: You know, another major downfall of iPods is their ability to stop working for no reason at all. This is okay for an iPod, but for a phone it would be unacceptable.
Yeah, and no other MP3 players suffer from unexplainable problems and glitches. Right.
The idea is what works for an mp3 player does not work for a cell phone. I was quite sure that was rather clear, and especially appropriate to use the iPod as it is the most similar technology to the iPhone.
I think you're a little too defensive when it comes to Apple products, GR.

well ipod is much more prone to break down than many other high capacity mp3 players on the market. taking a look at a samsung or panasonic or any other high capacity mp3 player, you'd notice fewer complaints of unexplainable shut downs. its happened to me on more than one occasion and i know many other ipod owners that suffer the same problem.
i wish they would find a way to fix that.....its really friggen annoying.
and i hope they also design an ipod similar to the iphone (with the touch screen interface). oh man, i would be all over that.

Ah, I understand where you're coming from, sheerheart. Yeah, I guess statistically, iPods have a higher "failure rate" than most cell phones. That can be a real problem if you're lost in the woods, or kidnapped, or in some dire situation.
And another thing about the iPhone...battery life. Apple is pretty much going to have to pull some crazy shit in order to get some decent battery life out of this thing.
The internet looks nifty...but I'm sure you will pay severely in airtime, and it won't be worth a damn thing. I would only use it if it's a straight per-month fee. That's the fucking thing about cell phones. Every God-damn thing you do costs more and more money, and the more you do it, the more it costs. I just want to pay a flat fee and get all the shit I can, like my internet, or my cable television.
I wouldn't pay any more than $200 for it, but I have a feeling it will cost more than that.
jesus, i know! thankfully most providers do have flate-rates for unlimited internet/ect, and its really not worth to use modern cell phone features without it.
as for the price.. lots of cells phones are $300+
..but you buy them with a plan or contract and get them for much cheaper. nobody buys cell phones outright..
too bad you're right about the pitiful storage space, but at least the battery life sounds reasonable.

Actually, I thought about this, and if the iPhone has a removable battery like most cell phones, it would just be worth it to buy three or so extras. The only problem would be charging them at night, which would be a bitch. If there was a separate battery charger, that would be great, as you could buy one per extra battery...but the iPhone's going to cost enough, and we don't have a fortune to spend on a trendy new piece of tech with all these peripherals.
All new technologies (not just iPhones - pretty much anything that looks snazzy) are suffering the fate of high power usage and insufficient battery supplies (due to size constraints). And I, for one, think that this really sucks.

Like the article said:
JAPAN VERSUS APPLE INC.
SPOILER: JAPAN WINS.
Still, I want one, but fuck the price and more importantly, the mandatory contract.

Haha. Oh wow.
"Apple will control what you can have on your IPhone. There will be no outside applications allowed, at least initially. And while Jobs and company may eventually allow developers to come up with apps for the IPhone, they — and Cingular — will have approval over what will make it on-board."
People will still find a way. Trust me. Trust the Internets.
This thing pretty much sounded too good to be true. That's why I usually stay away from these topics.
EDIT: Then again, didn't the iPod have complaints and problems by its first few weeks also?

i'm betting the second generation of phones will be 3g and have a bigger hd, so whenever that happens, I'll start paying attention

Re:
i'm betting the second generation of phones will be 3g and have a bigger hd, so whenever that happens, I'll start paying attention
I'm looking to get an iPhone now that the second-gen ones are going to be coming out late June / early July. 3G is the big thing for me, it's inexcusable for a primarily internet device to be on the slow-ass EDGE network like the current iPhone is. The contract is pricey but no more so than having a Blackberry or something, and the sheer coolness of an awesome new techy thing means it's worthwhile for a tech geek like me. There's also a good chance the rest of my family back home is switching to AT&T pretty soon, and if I can switch into a family plan, then it's not that expensive at all.

Re: iPhone
After some observation since its inception, one thing the iPhone definitely has is the, "Oh shit, you have one of those!? Let me see!" effect - although that never comes cheap. I have a feeling that effect still has several more months left in it for the iPhone, if not more - but eventually it will probably become as mundane as the iPod.

Re: iPhone
Here's an alternative: www.blackberry.com/blackberrybold/3G, Wi-fi, HSDPA A really fast processor (in videos the thing is totally snappy - no software lag) GPS Currently, the best resolution in any mobile device now. I've heard it's ridiculously crisp. (More often than not, I've heard it superior to the iPhone display, at least. And yes yes, I know screen size is important) 2 megapixel camera with video full QWERTY keyboard I think for people who really dig the tactile feel of buttons (rather than touch screens) and are using it primarily for an internet device, it'll look really attractive even compared to the 3G iPhone. While I don't know about the iPhone's processor, it's safe to say that the Bold's processor (doubled in speed from the previous BlackBeery Curve) will enable the device to surf the internet faster - less bottlenecking. Anyway, I think if you're in the market for a new mobile device and you're OK with forking down some decent cash for it...you should research the Bold a bit. It's going to come out sometime this summer (on AT&T first), likely in a month.

Re: iPhone
I've actually been looking that that recently. I'm just sold on the iPhone because of the multi-touch interface, I like it a lot more than the usual Blackberry-ish scrolling interface. Plus with hacked iPhones there are TONS of badass apps/programs/games you can get on there. One of my coworkers sells jailbroken iPhones and he has the coolest shit on his. I was calling my parents with a female voice-mask thing turned on from work. The main drawback for me with the iPhone is that you can't touch-type for text messages or anything, so I can't send a quick message without having to look at the phone while driving (when traffic is light of course) or send an emergency message during a movie (while covering the entire screen of course).
