I asked the "tech support" people about why I was unable to play games or download files for that matter. They said they do not allow gaming, and have never had anyone ask about it. (figures, all the kids do is check their myspace) I told them it was ridiculous and they said I need to study and not worry about "that gay ass gaming shit." People in Kentucky are retarded...good thing I'm transferring next year.

Theoretically, a college could ban gaming on the basis that it interrupts class time (i.e. lecture halls + laptops = World of Warcraft) and overall student academic performance.

If they were inclined to do so, of course.

It does make sense. The campus have to put some restrictions on computer use they paid for the computers they don't viruses or any weird shit. It's not like they'll go "Oh porn huh go ahead we don't mind."

it's all about bandwidth consumption. bandwidth costs money, and file sharing and online games that push around lots of data chew that up and make things difficult for everyone using the network.

and no, a college can't restrict what you do on your personal laptop/PC, but they can and do restrict what you do on their network.

tech support said you should concentrate on studying and not to worry about "that gay ass gaming shit"? WTF? if even the tech support has that kind of additude, that seems like a rather shitty college you're going to.

bandwidth does cost money, but at 26k a year that's a terrible connection you have there. infact the college I transfered out of had a tuition of 26k a year, and the entire campus shared a completely unrestricted 10Gigabit fiber optic connection to the national LambdaRail.

The connection speed at my dorm was crazy fast. Plus my up speed was usually 2-3x my down speed, so this made Bittorrent a lot of fun. But eventually the admins noticed this huge amount of outgoing traffic and forced everyone to cap their up speeds at 10k.

Haha, I guess not! I heard that in the 1800s they had a medical school that pretty much fell through...If it had been successful, it would now be up there with Harvard and such...It had a lot of potential.

We had a lot of famous alumni and teachers...Henry Clay, Stephen F. Austin, and lots of politicians...now it's just some liberal arts college :(

Side note: I also looked at the College of William and Mary (near VA Beach) which was the 2nd college in the US (Harvard was 1st) - anyone know anything about that school? It's farther from home, but I wonder if I should have looked more into it... :|

The College of William and Mary likes VA kids > you.

Here's my best advice for finding a great college:

1) Go to the northeastern United States. [Travel time]
2) Pick a direction (north, south, east, west, or anything in between). [5 seconds]
3) Walk that direction until you encounter a college that you have heard of at some point in your life. [5-10 minutes]
4) Apply. [45-90 minutes]
5) Wait for response. [From now until Spring]
6) Enroll. [From Spring until Fall]

Honestly, with, say, 90% of the world's best colleges in the northeast USA, it's not that hard.
