they don't have a reason to charge so much, other than that they have a devoted following that will pay for it.
100% of the reason any (good) company charges any price is because there is a certain level of demand for it (i.e. people who are willing to pay for it).
Anyway, I'm pretty sure it's just an established law of the universe that computers break, regardless of the manufacturer, or how hard you are aligned with the faith of your manufacturer of choice (looks like GR and zenk can represent both religions here on IM).
i'd like to chime in with support for creative.. i've owned two of their mp3 players... both of which still work... one is like 7 years old, the other is 1.5 years old. next, i also work in tech support for (my fellow) college kids... i've worked in the computer labs where the macs are riddled with crap and glitches and they crash harder and more frequently than the windows machines (because the windows machines use that weird imaging thing i mentioned earlier). the biggest problem i have right now is not the computers... they're all teh same... they all have launch buttons and a start button and all crash... but the users. you can't convince a mac user that his computer is the same as a windows one. especially since apple moved to x86, their hardware has been going to shit. they don't have a reason to charge so much, other than that they have a devoted following that will pay for it. oh, and while i'm at it... apple is a company of hypocrites and child pedophiles who believe in drm and profiting off of open source code and blah blah blah also, the reason windows machines cause hard drive failures is that college kids don't understand that windows has swap space, they just don't tell you about it like a linux/unix box does. so when your HD is completely full... there's nowhere for the files to go and shit goes berserk. ever since i lost a hard drive and started doing my research into how windows works, i've laways kept like %20 of my drive free... i've also never had another drive fail .
that's um... good advice considering i'm near filling my ext. hd... and my regular hd by proxy...
oh, and while i'm at it... apple is a company of hypocrites and child pedophiles who believe in drm and profiting off of open source code and blah blah blah

That is quite paradoxical.

Good one. Though I wouldn't say I'm a total Apple zealot now. My enthusiasm for the company has been on a steady, slow decline over the past few years. From reading about how they're not very "green" in their manufacturing techniques...and then the Macbook Air made me go ... ....
I gotta say. It meant a whole lot more to me back in the days of their rainbow-apple logo.
