Media players/EQ
Just curious as to which media players and EQ settings other IMers use for music. I play my music with jetAudio, with the BBE and BBE ViVA effects both on. The sound quality of this player is simply amazing, but of course you have to pay for said quality As for my EQ settings, I like to keep my bass and treble high, but keep the mid centered. iTunes. Enjoy needlessly spending money to listen to your music on your computer in some sort of magical high quality.

How is iTunes subpar? It plays the mp3s I have at the quality rip they are. Honestly, the quality of the file and your speakers have a far greater effect than the media player itself.

The really big thing for me is the bad file support, especially with video files. If I want to put a video on my iPod, 90% of the time I'd have to put it through a converter or actually BUY it from the iTunes store. Its pretty much like they're begging you to buy from them. Also, no .flac? Come on. But to each their own I guess. I just personally don't like iTunes

Re: Media players/EQ
iTunes does suck. It's extremely bloaty on Windows (not so much on OS X, from what I can tell - although I have enough CPU/RAM to feed a starving Ethiopian family for a year). There is no FLAC support. Or Ogg. Etc. That's Apple for you. Bastards. No Wikipedia/lyrics (a minor issue, but one nonetheless). Finally, there's no simple way to get third-party plugins to fix this shit they fucked up in the first place.
That said, if you pay money for a media player, you are an idiot. iTunes sucks, but I use it anyway because it came with my computer and works with my iPod (since it was kinda designed to do that - although it completely fucks up the library on the disk - making it even more useless for portable storage - which we can add to the list). It's kind of like when people use Internet Explorer. It's there, and it works. But it sucks.
Anyway, as far as EQ goes, they already EQ'd (and painstakingly, at that) the song in the studio. Flat.

Since file support isn't an issue for me, I don't really mind the first parts of your post, but I can't stress this or the "paying for a media player is retarded" part enough. How it is.

Re: Media players/EQ
I would be much more inclined to look around at other media players for the Mac if I weren't so tied to the iPod. I'm still running on a 2005 video iPod and I like it just fine (except for the now lessened battery life). The iPod's a totally solid player and the integration with iTunes is seamless and easy. If the Zune HD could sync with iTunes (or Mac OS X) I might even consider that. But as it is now, hardware has me tied down. And I tried Songbird, but. Eh.

Exactly. I have an iPod. I don't care if it isn't the best or the most cost-efficient portable media player out there. I already have one, and since it's a portable media player, it doesn't have to be the best - good enough is okay. That said, iPods and iTunes are a match made in heaven. Not only did Apple engineer it to be so, but they will continue to engineer and support it to be so. Since they are Apple, they will also continue to do everything within their power to make such a relationship exclusive to Apple products (lol@Palm Pre) - so it isn't even worth switching. Yeah, they're pretty much assholes, but it's not so egregious that I or millions of others even care to do anything about it. Also, Apple is pretty much notorious for anti-openness, so you pretty much know who you're getting into bed with beforehand - you can only blame yourself if you don't like it.
