Maybe I'm a little late to the party, however I just learned that Lucasfilm Ltd. was purchased recently by Disney. Turns out they're planning a new Star Wars trilogy, which'll start up where Return of the Jedi left off. I about shit myself when I heard the news. First one is due out sometime in 2015.

My hopes aren't terribly high considering Episodes 1-3 weren't too great, but yeah. I'm excited.

Thoughts? Who should direct? What aspects of the Star Wars universe should they explore?

People are throwing around a lot of names as far as directors go; Joss Whedon (not a big fan of this guy, tbh), Christopher Nolan (loved the shit out of The Dark Knight, but I can't see him doing Star Wars), Peter Jackson (his work on LOTR at least proves that he knows a thing or two about making epics) and others. George Lucas will be supervising each film, it seems. Hope the old boy lives to see the completed trilogy.

As long as George Lucas has nothing to do with it, I'm positive the new trilogy will be much, much better than the prequel trilogy. In my book, this is a best-case scenario. Disney has money, and they know what to do with it. I'm confident that they'll put the right people in charge of anything Star Wars. I'll get more in depth with your specific questions when it isn't 3:30 am, Lesser_Hamster haha.

I saw various people post this on Facebook today. Totally thought it was a "Halloween Fool's Prank" or something. :dizzy:

I will probably have more to say when I am not sleepy as fuck.

It would appear that a sequel trilogy is in the works, which will span from 2015 till 2019. After that, they intend to release a new Star Wars film every two to three years or so.

Oh lawd. Not sure how to feel about this. Another trilogy? OK. Another trilogy and then new movies until the end of time? Not so sure I want that. I'll withold any judgement on this news until there are more facts and remain cautiously optimistic, however this really has the potential to become Star Wars Episodes 7-∞: The Quest for More Money.

Not excited yet, with so little information.

Supposedly some of the tie-in books post Jedi are good (I have not read them), so there's potential if they choose to use that as the basis of the story. However, the books include some of the original characters, it would be weird to see other actors playing the roles.

I'm kind of a hardcore Star Wars fan, so naturally when I heard this, I was kind of like this:

But yeah. I wouldn't mind seeing the likes of someone like Joss Whedon or Peter Jackson directing. Let's just hope it isn't Michael Bay...

They... they wouldn't let that happen, right?

I think that Peter Jackson might have the right stuff. Can't really think of anyone else off the top of my head I'd trust with the franchise, though. There's a lot of love out there for Whedon, but I personally don't get it.

Based on what I've read, George Lucas passed along a few treatments for this new trilogy that will likely be used as a framework for the new films. I don't know how that's going to work out, though. He originally envisioned Mark Hammil and friends to be middle-aged when he came up with these ideas. I don't think anyone wants to see the old characters re-cast, but at the same time, they're getting too old to play their old roles. I could see Mark Hammil filling an Obi-Wan type role or something, but the others? I'm not so sure...

I'm very excited myself, and I feel that Disney will handle this trilogy with great care, and treat the fans to something unforgettable.
