It's all about Hit Girl. Anybody else seen this? It was a lot more serious and violent at some points than I expected, echoing Tarantino films such as the Kill Bills and Watchmen in some regards.

Yes. It was fantastic.

I thought it was good. I wouldn't go so far as to say fantastic, but I was pretty well-entertained, there were a decent bit of funny parts, and the action scenes were badass.

Honestly, I thought that Kick-Ass was the most useless and superfluous character in the movie. I would have much preferred the "Hit Girl and Big Daddy" movie. It seems like Kick-Ass, the "main character," was just a vehicle for their story.

However, this guy seems to have liked the movie:
There are 3 action sequences in the movie that I would put up there as among the best choreographed, directed and executed actions scenes i have ever seen. I am putting each of these up there with the street shoot out in Heat, Aliens busting through the ceiling in Aliens, base being over run by NVA in Platoon, mech suit battle in D9, Swat team at the door in Leon..etc.
In addition to the artistry and craftsmanship in making these scenes, all of the scenes mentioned above are great because of the dramatic build up which creates emotional investment. Kick Ass is able to create this somehow amidst a blur of seemingly almost non-stop violence. One thing Kick Ass does in its action sequences better than any of the other sequences I mentioned above is use of score. While the other great action sequences I mentioned earlier tend to let the action speak for itself with little music or just a few dramatic bars, Kick Ass uses very powerful thematic music from John Murphy in the action sequences giving them an almost operatic feel. The result is very very powerful. A good example of this is the climactic scene in Last of the Mohicans (another great action sequence) where they run up the mountain to rescue the girl from the bad guy.

Its a bit of an schizophrenic movie in that you have the high school life of Kick Ass which is done with kind of a Superbad feel and then you also have the Big Daddy/Hit Girl vendetta story which feels like Luc Besson in his prime. The first part helps set up the film but the Big Daddy/Hit Girl plot eventually takes over the film. Again, its a strange kind of combination but the Kick Ass story does help set up and provide background for the Big Daddy/Hit Girl story.

I am an absolute movie junkie but this is the first time I ever walked out of the theatre and then felt compelled to watch again the next day. It was actually better the second time.
I put this and D9 as the best movies I have seen in the last 5 years.
I enjoyed it. It caused so much useless controversy though. It never ceases to amaze me when people complain about R rated movies and M rated games.

I haven't followed the controversy at all. But regardless of the R rating, I could see some people would be entirely uncomfortable with the character of Hit Girl. We're okay with manly men being violent and having foul mouths, a little girl is another story.

I was a bit surprised at how funny it was, I hadn't seen any of the trailers, but I've read the comic and the comic is like 75% him getting fucked up and 25% kicking ass/funny moments. I still loved the movie though. Hit Girl was perfect. I think she's a bit scarier in the comics though:

It was one of those movies which is made memorable by a misleading trailer. The impression I got from the trailer was COMPLETELY different from what the movie actually is. I also have not read the comic, but I plan on doing that now.

I could be wrong, but I thought the trailers were more or less exactly what the movie actually is.

I didn't feel misled by the trailer. I saw it only maybe once or twice, but it served its purpose in getting me interested.

It seemed more comedic in the trailer.

That's how it always is, the trailers always show the funniest parts and then the rest lets you down. I did find myself laughing a bit, although I wouldn't categorize this movie as just a comedy, and some of the funny things were funny in a dark sort of way, so I don't know if everyone would find them funny.

I also forgot to mention I actually liked Nicolas Cage in this movie. I'm generally baffled by his continued appearance in certain actiony movies, but I thought he was good in this.

Yeah, I did too, because he talks like the old-school Batman.
