...is fucking brilliant. Animated movies aren't supposed to be this good.

Pixar does it again.

:shred:

(The new short with the movie, Presto, is also damn amazing)

I want to go see this movie. I was doing a project in school about a flying car. A model of a flying car. I made it with a box. It ended up looking like wall-e :dizzy:

I'll try to see it this weekend.

It was good. I don't get how it was amazing, though, as many people purport. It was even boring and slow at times.

I liked it, but yeah, I don't know if I'd call it brilliant or totally amazing. The thing that I always liked was how much detail they put into, well, the details and jokes as far as the theme of the movie's universe and I didn't notice that as much this time.

When they make it into the Axiom, I was amused but also cringing. I don't know if I like so much social commentary in a Pixar movie.

The whole movie was pretty much social commentary. I found it to be somewhat irksome, but a lot of people just eat up (haha) all that anti-consumerism nonsense without even thinking about it. Anyway, it provided a decent plot - I think the movie really picked up when they got to the Axiom, actually, whereas it was rather slow beforehand. Honestly, though, I don't understand why this movie is being so highly acclaimed. It's a really good movie, but it's not quite great.

Oh, also, Fred Willard is the greatest human being ever, I can't forget to mention that.

Not to spark an econ/philsophy debate here, but could you expand just a bit on what you mean here? I haven't seen the movie, but I think a position challenging anti-consumerism would be interesting to read. It's one of those ideas (heavy consumerism) that's been presented to me as, you know, sort of the devil (along with cutting our forests down, marketing cigarettes to children, degradation of youth culture, etc.) It seems like archetype of the modern "eco-friendly, aware American" should be against consumerism. So what are your thoughts on that?

Sorry, to keep prodding you for information in different threads, but you're a pretty interesting person.

I was so caught up with the the simple little story of Wall-E trying to get back to EVE that all the commentary sort of took the back-burner in my head, I didn't find it to really be the focus of the movie. Present, definitely, but I didn't think it was too heavyhanded (but I might just be used to stuff like that in sci-fi movies).

I mainly go to movies for the characters, not really the story, and in that sense, I thought Wall-E delivered in spades. I would say Wall-E's definitely the most iconic character to come out of Pixar.

I don't really want to derail this thread, because it was a really good movie, and my deal with it is really only a small aspect of the entire work, on a subject that tends to stick out to me.

But a quick note shouldn't be too harmful: Consumption in itself is not a bad thing. People have a demand for certain things, and there is nothing inherently wrong with supplying them. The world is a system, and our wants, needs, and values are dynamic. When certain factors change (pollution, deforestation, etc.), so do our priorities. We begin to demand less pollution, renewable resources, etc. That's why there are more trees in the United States than there were a hundred years ago. That's why we have a large demand for the "eco-friendly" Toyota Prius (which may not be as environmentally sound as purported, on the manufacturing side - don't ask me, I haven't looked into it). That's why countless dollars are being spent by corporations to research and develop alternate energy sources.

Consumption is so much more than using up resources and creating waste. My only gripe is when they are taken as synonyms, or when people think that eliminating or limiting consumption will somehow save the world (starve the world, maybe).

So, in other words: the world is socially constructed, and we can therefore bring about change simply by demanding it. So if we don't find heavy consumption ethically justified anymore, we just have to clamor for its moderation, something we seem to be doing at the moment...

I have to hand it to you, sheer; that's pretty inspirational. We may just save the world after all... :O

I like that the solution to the economic crisis is buying another car.

I like technology, but historical progress is a half-way myth, and why shouldn't we walk/ride a bike as much as possible? It's better for our health, let alone the environment.

WALL-E has such a funny character design. He looks like the bastard progeny of Johnny 5 and an orange toolbox, but so cute somehow.

If our values were based entirely upon our health and the environment, then you would be absolutely correct.
