Apparently a new series is being made. I don't know if it's really a direct sequel, but it takes place in the same world.

Thanks for the heads up. Enjoyed Last Exile. And Range Murata's character design is great.

I used to watch Last Exile when it was on G4 (formerly known as TechTV, R.I.P.) I liked it, but never saw it all due to scheduling conflicts (lol sports.) I should re-watch it sometime, but I've developed a horrible bias against English dubs. Has anyone watched it in Japanese, and if so, is it worth the watch?

Personally I prefer this series in English, but the Japanese is also very good. What is it that's caused you to develop a bias against English dubs?

Terrible voice acting, unnecessary film editing/censorship, knowing Japanese...

This might've been an understandable complaint ten or fifteen years ago, but for the most part these things aren't too common in the US anime industry anymore.

Then again, if you understand enough Japanese to watch your stuff in Japanese, then all the more power to ya. That's pretty cool.

Granted, this is a 4kids dubbing, but I think this exemplifies everything that needs to be said. And yes, I do know there are exceptions to the rules.

So you're accepting that a small minority of US-licensed anime that comes across is handled by 4Kids...but you're saying it exemplifies everything that's wrong with dubbing? Umm...I mean, I guess. But 4Kids material can only be used as an argument for "Look how shitty things are when localization and dubbing go horribly wrong." As far as I'm aware, most anime goes to respectable companies like ADV, Funimation, and Manga Entertainment for localization and dubbing. High quality titles now tend to have some pretty good voice actors. I felt that Last Exile had a pretty solid cast, actually...

Nice. You know what you did there? You posted a dub by one of the worst companies in the industry. All of their dubs are notoriously bad. It's like arguing that beer is a terrible beverage and then handing someone a warm can of Steel Reserve to prove your point. This whole "English dubs are censored/bad" is pretty outdated in today's industry. Bad English dubs ARE the exceptions, not the rule.

Companies like 4Kids are something of a rarity these days. All of the major English voice acting studios- such as the ones employed by Bandai and Funimation- actually do a bang-up job on their dubs. Whether or not you like them is a different story, of course, but they're quality efforts, many times being [i]at least as good[/i] as their Japanese counterparts. English dubs got a terrible reputation back in the day because of extremely poor translations and weak performances. These problems are pretty minimal these days however; if you're watching something new that's being released by a respectable company, then the dub tends to be quite good. If you're watching a shitty product from a sub-par company like 4Kids, well, I'd have to ask first and foremost why you've got such bad taste in shows.

My personal opinion is that Beck MCS was MUCH better in english.

How do they do...the [i]English[/i] parts. You know, where everyone is so impressed with their ability to speak English, even though they sound like they have cerebral palsy.

They speak Japanese.

I only watched the first six or so episodes of BECK, but I remember the American guys talking with a horribly bad American accent. The dub didn't make much sense.
