Maybe Fender wouldn't agree to let them use the name so they had to just make it a generic electric instead lolol.

It's a "Competition Red" Fender Mustang, specifically the Japanese domestic model because they offered a lot of those with matching painted headstocks.

Man, I wanted one of those so bad for a long time, with the matching headstock and original pickup switches. America doesn't get shit for Mustang selection, and apparently it's illegal to import from Japan. And I'd hate to buy a guitar without playing it first.

perhaps the chance of getting it domestically will go up slightly after the new series airs? maybe they'll even make a few FLCL tie-in models, like they did for Beck way back.

also, the official synopsis for the new series that was posted by Adult Swim last year includes the question "What happened to her Rickenbacker 4001 she left with Naota?" ...I hope we get to find out

They're playing this on Toonami right now in Japanese with subs. I'm hearing some new pillows music which sounds pretty good.

edit: Oh shit, a new recording of My Foot. It sounds way closer to the original than previous re-recordings.

Not to be promoting piracy, but for anyone that missed it or doesn't get Adult Swim, the episode has been recorded and uploaded.

hold on i just realised that the US trailer says FLCL Progressive airs in June and Alternative airs in September, but the Japanese theatrical release says Alternative on Sep 7 and Progressive on 28. sooooooo they're not chronologically connected? also Adult Swim aired ep 1 of Alternative instead of Progressive...
I'm hearing some new pillows music which sounds pretty good.
I'm hearing tons of instrumental stuff that kinda sounds like the pillows but I can't confirm becuz no vocals. I'm skeptical as the pillows are only credited with the songs "Kuroi Guitar", "My Foot", and "Star Overhead". The rest of the music credits are "Music/Sound - R O N", "Music Production - VERYGOO", and "Music Producer - Eri Isobe". Soooooo I'm thinking they mighta just hired other people to write background music for the show, and those people just made stuff that sounds like the pillows...which, if true, really pisses me off. However, some of the instrumentals really do sound like the pillows, like the one at the end of the penultimate scene (listen to dat bass), so I have some hope.

Anyway "Star Overhead" rules. Super fun pop song. I do, however, hope we hear some more rockin' pillows songs before the end of the band; "Spiky Seeds" certainly has that base covered for now.

Well, that was...ehhhhh. This first episode of Alternative lacked the charm, energy and weirdness of the original. It was especially lacking the experimental, stylized animation. Maybe it'll come around to being something worth watching, but so far it's pretty weak in the writing department.

Post Re: FLCL sequel
The pace was noticeably slower, so I'm thinking maybe they spread things out over the twelve episodes instead of two batches of rock'em sock'em six ala original FLCL. I didn't think it was bad, but it was definitely holding back a little bit. I wouldn't say it's inappropriate for a new FLCL to have a slower, more deliberate introduction to the new characters. Since they have decided to use a tight group of friends, it's not going to be directly comparable to Naota, his dad and Mamimi dealing with the space alien and her robot showing up, so I'd say a little bit more deliberate pacing could be appropriate for this particular story.

From what I remember, we got to see that giant mall, which could be Medical MALLchanica (SEE WHAT I DID THERE    ) and also I quite liked that they were establishing a foil to Haruko already with that agent who is clearly familiar with her, since he knows her real name. The Dr. Pepper product placement was cute. I liked the scene when Haruko first showed up at the restaurant.

I'm psyched for Progressive. Looks way better than Alternative.

Also just realised that all the characters are significantly older than Naota was in the original series, so I guess we're tackling a different stage of childhood this time around? I admit it sorta does look like a typical high school anime as a result, but still hopin' it doesn't turn out super generic and devoid of the meaning that the original series was packed with
