i haven't seen the animes, but i've read some evangelion and full metal panic.

they're pretty cool.

i like a huge range:
dragon ball/dbz/dbgt
rurouni kenshin
azumanga daiou
gundam wing
sailor moon

i'm sure i forgot a bunch.
so you like toonami...
noooooooooo.
i hate toonami. i hate dubbed anime, and i was pissed at how they ruined many parts of the dragon ball serieses and how they f'ed up sailor moon. they turned it from a comedy/action/romance into a little girl's flick. made me mad as hell. have you heard the english theme song?! GAWD!
Tell it like it is, man!!!! I always had to mute the theme song and blare Astronomy Domine by Pink Floyd when the time came. And they took out all of the funny-ass lesbian love twists and turns. (YES!!! They are lesbians!)

They also censored on episode of Outlaw Star (but they forgot to bleep out "bastard", "hell" and "crap" in a bunch of others).

Damn Toonami!! Why must you f**k up the good shows?! And how are they gonna crap up Naruto?!!!

actually schmatz, the only show of those i've seen was gundam wing, and although i first saw it on toonami, that was only a few episodes. i watched the whole thing later with subtitles on dvd.

so psh.

however, kenshin is on my to watch list. i have obtained the entire series subtitled in totally legal ways and am waiting for finals to be over to watch it.

i forgot outlaw star. i might buy the boxed set this summer.

but i know how it is. in sm, they have a lot of lesbian jokes, though only one or two of them actually are. it's funny as hell though, especially where usagi finds a magazine entitled "kinky girls" in rei's stuff.

AS just aired Paranoia Agent last week and its friggen brillant. Best. Opening. Ever. Sadly, no one else seems to like it. Its directed by the same guy who did Tokyo Godfater and Perfect Blue(excellent films on their own right) so check it out later tonight.

Just got the Elfen Lied starter box. Lots of [sutable] gore and ..stuff. Probably not some up some of your guys' alley, but worth a look.

Gunslinger Girl is "fun" if you enjoyed .hack/sign(more character driven then getting all gun-ho-rambo, but I didn't mind an anime rpg with just "chatting") and Chrono Crusade might suit you if you liked Hellsing. Just replace vampires with demons, commandos with nuns, and modern London with 1920's New York. Much better set up then Hellsing, imo. Better ending, too.

Ok guys- I just got around to this thread and there are a few nobody seems to be talking about...

...butt-first: Ah's dig-

FLCL, Cowboy Bebop, Haibane Renmei, Lain, Boogiepop, GITS, Naruto, blah, blah, woof woof...

But you absolutely MUST see: TEXHNOLYZE.

..and NieA_7. This one is sort of like Haibane but different. Both are by Yoshitoshi ABe.

Texhnolyze is absolfuckin'lutely brutal, but it has great instrumental music by (mostly) Hajime Mizoguchi....that's MR. Yoko Kanno to you. (Yeah. They're MARRIED. I was heartbroken.) The series ending song has to be the saddest, most desolate thing I've ever heard. (Sung by Yoko Ishida: Walking Through the Empty Age).

The NieA_7 soundtrack is mostly baritone ukelele music. Very GOOD bariuke music. I just bought 5 of the damned things (baritone ukeleles) and passed them out as gifts. ($19.99 from Musiciansfriend.com)

and Happy Lesson (sorta)

ALL PURPOSE CULTURAL CAT GIRL NUKU NUKU doesn't need to actually be "seen".....just memorized and whipped out in the presence of drunken people. Amazing Nurse Nanako and Dirty Pair are as good and more to the point.

i've been meaning to check out texhnolyze, but i hadn't yet gotten a recommendation to do so. i didn't want to jump into it just because it's from the makers of haibane renmei. i've also been meaning to check out the appleseed movie... anyone seen it?

there's this one coming out soon that looked quite interesting- i can't remember the name, but it was about a girl warrior in medieval japan who had to disguise herself as a man to take her brother's place on some mission (critical to the future of japan, naturally) for the government.

That's like asking "Why do you listen to the pillows?" Answer: because we enjoy it, or at least that's why I do. :)

It's very good- but it's also very violent and disturbing. The story is hard to follow, but fortunately they include a pre-synopsis that gives you the backstory. EVERYONE is deranged to some extent; the anti-hero is shadowed by a prophetess that will remind you strongly of Rakka visually but otherwise is just tragic and eerie.

It's 22 episodes (called rogues) and there is almost no dialogue for the first 4 or 5 episodes. The juxaposition of violent and horribly sad images with the slow and sparse and beautiful cello and piano music of Mizoguchi heightens the contrast to an excrusciating but bittersweet level. And the ending has got to be the most desolate scene imaginable.

The story is essentially a condemnation of technology for technology's sake, personified by political string-pullers in Washington D.C....though that role is epitomized by an insane child-man induged by his multiple-personality matriarch.

It's worth it- I've made 4 passes so far and I'm in the middle of my 5th.

I'm sorry, but if that's a sorry reason. Your life must be pretty crappy to run to anime.

Now go emo it up in LJ
