Hall Pass. Horrible movie. If only I had known it was a 'romantic comedy'...

My search to see terrible movies led me to watch 'Birdemic: Shock and Terror' and 'Zombie Nation'. Both were miserable movies, but I would actually consider rewatching Birdemic with friends for a few laughs, whereas Zombie Nation was just horrible.

Saw Jesus Camp. It's pretty old. I'd seen a bit of it in the past, but only recently got around to watching it in its entirety. I raged HARD.

Here's something I wouldn't expect myself saying a few years ago:

No offense meant to those that just mentioned it, but in general, I'm sort of tired of everyone talking up Jesus Camp as this movie that you just "HAVE TO SEE." Like it's eye-opening in a really useful way or something. Jesus Camp is about batshit crazy people. There are batshit crazy people everywhere. Batshit crazy environmentalists, animal rights activists, bodybuilders, drug addicts, gun nuts, Muslims, Chinese moms...the list goes on. Probably even some batshit crazy atheists too.

So yeah, Jesus Camp is ridiculous, fucked up, sad, and scary. But it's not some "THIS IS WHAT CHRISTIANS ACTUALLY BELIEVE" thing. This is not what the religious Right looks like. The religious Right are those people who may or may not go to Church and may or may not have some extensive knowledge of the Bible. In practical terms, the fight is against the moderates, not those who send their kids to Jesus Camp.

Jesus Camp is pretty fringe, like Westboro. I don't think we can learn much that is meaningful from it. Other than that cults will act like cults. It's more like, "get a load of this shit" fodder.

edit: I want to be more clear: It's not that "fringe" things don't have any use/knowledge value. But I think the way Jesus Camp is interpreted and used in debates by nonreligious people isn't right. Throwing Jesus Camp in your argument about why Christianity is bad is very weak, I think.

I would say your entire argument amounts to "Hammers are NOT that useful because they are ineffective at installing screws."

It's important to look at the "fringe," whether it be fundamentalist Christianity, Scientology, WBC, or Jonestown. No one here said anything about Jesus Camp depicting Sunday School at their local church - obviously it depicts a fringe group. That's something you invented to argue against.

Rather, it's important to look at the fringe because yes, this shit is fucked up, and it is happening on this planet. That's sufficient alone, but any time we discuss cults, it raises certain philosophical questions. Are these people crazy? Well, yes - but it's not like Jonestown just happened to recruit only crazy people. You're not crazy. But what if you grew up in that life? Would you be any different? Maybe a little, but for the most part, probably not. It's important to look at these things, to ask these questions. And how do we stop this shit from happening? While respecting their rights to their beliefs? What exactly is it that compels someone to stay in these groups? Or to join them in the first place? Is it not eye-opening to see it in action? I mean, it's difficult or impossible to understand, even if we have certain explanations for these phenomena.

And for the atheist crowd, such phenomenon can be used quite effectively to point out the hypocrisy of religious persons. "So wait...what these people believe is crazy...but what you believe is rational?" Atheists everywhere could point to those rapture folk, "You know how, despite being Christian, even you believe these people are nuts? Well, that's the way you look to us, believing in nonsense without a rational basis."

The behavior in the camp in that movie might be fringe, but the beliefs espoused by the people in it most certainly are not. I hear that kind of stuff every day. In casual conversation, in Facebook posts and blog entries, in youtube videos, and on television.

With Sheer and Jolmes on this. Being raised Mormon, I saw examples of what Jomei is talking about all around me to varying extents. Just because it's showing a lot of the extreme end (and not just the extreme end, some of the things in there are a bit more widespread than you'd think) doesn't mean there aren't a lot of facets that are commonalities of general Christianity.

This.

Seriously, mang. No one said that Jesus Camp was an accurate depiction of Christianity across the board.
