Post Re: (500) Days of Summer
So I know I'm a year or two late on this, but I finally watched this movie. I rather liked it, but probably not for the reasons other people do.

I viewed it as a cautionary tale: men, don't be this goober. Nervously fidgeting for weeks before making a move on the girl you like? Obsessing over stupid minute details of her interaction with you? Placing her on a pedestal and worshiping the ground she walks on? Huge, relationship-killing mistakes. The thing that many guys (formerly myself) don't understand is that relentlessly worshiping a woman and trying to do everything to please her doesn't create attraction - it creates contempt.

Thing is, I used to be this guy. It was kind of depressing watching this movie and thinking, "man, I can't believe I used to be like that." At least I learned my lesson, and with a minimum of heartache required, really. And so I aim to go through life not as a noodle-brained girly-boy, but as a man with a modicum of self-respect and confidence. And I will try my best to exhibit the kind of behavior that will make women be attracted to me from within, not from begging and pleading.

But part of me thinks a lot of people who saw this film totally missed the point.
This is exactly how I felt watching this. I went through what he went through in the past... except it didn't even go as well as it did for him, and actually turned out much worse. I learned my lesson, but only after I have been reduced to a pathetic pile of rubble.

But yeah, that's a large part of what I took from it.

EDIT: Utsuseru, the link is good stuff.
This topic is entirely too tl;dr.

Can someone give a summarized version?
I really think you should read the link Utsuseru posted. Its a very clever and witty review on the movie.

tl;dr

"The overriding message of the movie is: Hey man, sometimes love hurts. And chicks are mysterious forces who want what their hearts want, so there’s nothing you can do about it except dance to their tune."

So I just rewatched this movie and saw it from Tom's perspective this time. The first time I watched this I saw and focused more on Summer. Not what Tom was doing. Or at least not the 'mistakes' he was doing. It got me thinking that certain things he's doing I AM doing in the current relationship that I am in now. I 'worship the ground she stands on'. I obsess about stupid things. Everything that I DIDN'T want to ever be has happened. God, This is one reason why I hate relationships. I KNEW i was going to turn into this person. It's happened before and it's happening again. I'm being too clingy and possessive. And honestly. I don't know how to change it... I don't know how..I look back at who i use to be before I got into this relationship and I LOVED that me. I got inspired easily. I was happy, I would do what 'I' wanted. I would play guitar. I would write every so often. The last time I wrote was last year. The last time I played guitar was who the hell even knows! I kept telling myself NOT to change but I just couldn't help it. At this point with what's been going on I don't even know if we'll make it work or if we'll just FINALLY end it. I've been told a million times to leave this girl. Yet I didn't listen. I 'do' have the oneitis. I can't believe I didn't notice these things sooner. I KNEW something was wrong with me. I just never understood exactly what it was. I feel so down that I can't see myself getting out of this. I DO try everything to please her. I DO try obsess about things. God, I don't even know what to think at this point. I wanna goto bed but I can't sleep..I wanna get drunk, but i don't have anything to drink. I wanna do something!

I need help :( :( :( :( :( :( :(

lolz.

So..what's up with this movie? I almost want to watch it to be in the know, but it sounds retarded and that I'll be constantly embarrassed for another person and facepalming the entire time.

If you've ever felt like a hopeless romantic, or have ever had you heart broken by a girl, it's worth watching for the "I've been there" catharsis. Also a pretty cool movie in terms of the nostalgic indie-esque cinematography.
