Re: Scott Pilgrim
Still need to see this movie! I have a feeling I'll be more entertained by the references than anything, but who knows. What I really want to do is read the comics.

Re: Scott Pilgrim
I think Napoleon Dynamite's ultimate appeal was that the movie - no matter how many quirky characters and situations popped up - still remained familiar, like it was your boring hometown with your painfully typical students. Every school has their own Napoleon Dynamite.
I could understand how an entire movie made out of nuanced performances, a "normal folk" script, and the doldrums of teenage humiliation might fly over some peoples heads but goddamn did I think it was a hilarious movie. It wasn't just a movie with a bunch of "planted" lines the writers expected everyone to eat up and repeat to infinity, the daily interactions between the main and supporting cast won the day. It was one slice-of-life gem after another.
Yes, there was a bit too much downtime that relied on the peculiarities of Napoleon, Randy, Pedro, and Kip. Some of it worked very well (tater tots in the pocket, Napoleon's shitty yearbook drawing, "Napoleon you can't have the fun pack", "Tina, you fat lard, come get dinner") and some of it was worthless filler (the hunting rant in the locker room, the time machine, the chicken coop, the state fair testing). That's the kind of movie the director was trying to make, and I can't fault him for trying, only for a few notable misfires. Not everyone can craft a comedy that slays from start to finish, and I think it deserves it's current review average on rotten tomatoes.
And I don't think it's possible to not laugh when randy hurled a steak at Napoleon's face.

Re: Scott Pilgrim
Napoleon Dynamite was mostly a string of silly one-liners and one-shot jokes, some of which were funny, most of which really weren't, at least not to me. Saw it once and wouldn't watch it again. I'll probably see Scott Pilgrim again later down the road, however.

Saw this. Thought the movie was okay, but I hate Michael Cera and the character type he represents. Am I the only one who tires of rooting for an inept pussy?
Culkin was great in every scene, though.

No, no you aren't. Plus, he doesn't even have to act to make money!

I've managed to miss several of his movies so I'm not sick of him/his character yet. But I imagine I might be if I did see them, since he apparently plays the same characters.
It gets tiring rooting for manly macho men too though.

Culkin was great in every scene, though.
He seems a lot more loud and obnoxious in the comic than Michael Cera portrays him in the movie.
But no, I love Michael Cera, so, shut up, Jomei. Let him do things all awkward and funny-like. If your opinions become widespread and I see less Cera, Jomei, so help me, I'll mail Metal to your house wearing nothing but a ribbon!

Re: Scott Pilgrim
Knives is cooler than Romona. She also doesn't have evil exes and shit, so yeah. Original ending ftw lol.
