Listening to Ryuusuke speak English gives me a much better appreciation for Sawao's pitiful (albeit sometimes impressive) attempts at the English language in pillows songs.
Honestly, listen to one of the retarded special education kids (no, I'm not calling special education kids retarded - I'm actually telling you to find one that IS retarded) at your local high school, and then listen to Ryuusuke. If you can tell the difference, then you are much more perceptive than I.
If the retarded child you find happens to be female, you can run a similar test with Maho that is just as effective.
But seriously, I have NEVER gotten the impression that Sawao could have been a "retarded American speaking English." He always sounded just like "a normal Japanese person speaking English."
Ultimately, however, it was a good show. It was...inspirational, although it was really slow in the beginning and hard to pick up. It made me feel that the rock scene was still alive and breathing, and not being overtaken by MTV pop and rap. The opening song was catchy too, despite the closing song sucking hard. My favorite part about the show were all the rock and roll references, whether direct (the famous classic rock artists picking up the trash from the concert) or indirect (similarities between the story of Ryuusuke's Lucille and B.B. King's Lucille). The best thing you can have as a rock and roller is an appreciation for its history, as well as faith in its present and future. This show was a true rock and roll moment for me. Rock on.

Yeah, the references were great!!
Yngway's guitar shop, complete with the hardcore fatass shredder...
And...near the end, when it showed some flashes of the big stage acts...there was one singer with brownish skin and short dread-looking hair, sorta like Bob Marley almost. It looked a lot like Zach de la Rocha from Rage Against the Machine. I wouldn't be surprised if that WAS supposed to be him, considering there was another fictional band in the show called "Rage Against the Kenichi" (or something like that).
Also in that same scene, there was a band with a normal looking Japanese guy with short hair and glasses, with a Telecaster. Looking disgruntled. Possible Mukai reference? Oh, I think so.
I'll post the screenshots I took a long time ago...soon.

I thought it was sad that Ryuusuke and Maho struggled with Japanese, and were supposedly Americanized, yet they could barely speak coherent English.
Man, I'm watching this show again sometime soon XD

just started watching this:
i don't know if anybody pointed this out yet, but about 10 minutes or so into episode two, when they're descending the stairs to the "live house," one of the papers on the left wall says "AZEN BOYS."
also, see if you can't spot kenji in the crowd when the pillows are doing last dinosaur

In the manga, there's a chapter cover with maho's face on the front of the album cover that looks exactly like the NUM HEAVYMETALLIC cover

Sorry for reviving tha old thread, but I am having alot of trouble finding Beck since they dubbed it. No vids on YouTube and I've only seen a few on veoh, and they were dubbed, plus they replaced some of the songs, which might mean they'll replace LAST DINOSAUR.

Beck should've just stayed in Japan. Whoever decided to license it must have gone into it knowing "Yeah, this is a completely stupid idea."
Seriously.
1) Japanese characters. Some speak poor English.
2) American characters fluent in English.
3) Language barrier.
HOW THE HELL IS SOME CANADIAN ANIME LICENSING COMPANY GONNA PULL THAT SHIT OFF?

That's interesting. They might go the fan-translated SMT route and have the English-speakers speak Japanese or something.
Actually, in Shin Megami Tensei, they just had the American military oing here!"people say things in italics like, "Hey! What you are doing here at this place! Join for drink!"
Of course you can't italicize your letters when you talk.

But that would completely ruin the whole plot/concept of the show. By switching the Japanese characters to English-speaking Americans, and...and...
BOTTOM LINE: There is no way Beck could reasonably maintain the integrity or logic of the original series if it were dubbed into another language.
The best way would be to watch it fansubbed, or subbed. Any other way would be complete mind-fuck.

Good news: they didn't replace Last Dinosaur. Bad news, though: The dub for Sawao didn't match him very well...

the code switching for the series was taken out all together, so its just in english. I also noticed that a few of the songs have english vocals in them. They aren't bad, but still. At least you don't have to deal with the original giving the english language a royal ass beating(they seriously couldn't afford to hire seiyuus who actually speak coherent English? Would it have killed someone for a little authenticity?). But the dub isn't all that bad. If you can't get your hands on a decent subbed torrent or something, then it won't kill you to watch it dubbed. I just HIGHLY recommend you watch it in japanese since the experience is a bit watered down, to be totally honest.

But, seriously, they got Shinichiro's and Sawao's voice really bad, though, I like what Sawao says to Taira.
