I saw Guardians of the Galaxy last night. I'm pretty surprised no one's mentioned it.
I went in with no real expectations and was definitely surprised at how enjoyable an experience it was. It was really, really well done and I'm really glad there's going to be a sequel.
I liked it. It could have been utterly bad, but it wasn't.
Sin City 2- was so looking forward to this but ultimately it was just okay. The Dwight/Ava story was great but the rest was kinda meh.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
Watched the CGI Captain Harlock movie.
Pros: It was really pretty. And lots of stuff exploded.
Cons: It would have been more engaging as a 2-hour-long AMV set to old Linkin Park favorites. Like, seriously, there was no fucking plot there. It was just a limp, crappy story.
This having been said, the visuals were still good enough to service my Harlock boner.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
I just watched the Kenshin live action films and they were really really well done adaptations. The only kinda meh thing was how some of the side characters' story arcs had to be scrapped/changed/shortened, but you have to forgive the filmmakers due to the limited amount of time they were able to work with.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
Just watched The Warriors on Netflix. It's been on my to-watch list for a couple years now, and I gotta say, it was a pretty good film. Of course parts of it are cheesy because it's a 70s movie about gangs and a lot of the characters are really flat, but that being said, there are parts that are pretty deep, and man, there were some wicked one-liners.
Some greats, "I'm gonna shove that bat up your ass and turn you into a popsicle." Also: "Why don't you just tie a mattress to your back?"
I'd recommend the movie, if for anything other than just to watch the iconic "Warriors, come out to play-ay~" scene.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
I almost watched that one time, but decided I wasn't in the mood for an older film that evening, lol. It's on the list though.
I plan to rewatch all the Chow Yun-Fat films that the wife has on her hard drive over the rest of the summer to help me learn Cantonese (and also because CYF is awesome, as is John Woo).

It was time well spent. 5 stars. Definitely recommended if you're into comedy and kung fu movies.

If you haven't seen Straight Outta Compton you should. It was an incredible movie and showed the world how we do it on the West Coast

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
I don't generally watch movies, but as I've been trying to strengthen my listening in Spanish I've been watching some Spanish-language films. One which stood out to me was Nostalgia de la Luz, which manages to interweave the topics of the observatories in the Atacama desert, archaeologists who find remnants there, as well as the concentration camps and executed political prisoners of the Pinochet regime, and the women who still go out there with shovels looking for their relatives' remains. All of these people are searching for memory, for history--it was rather moving, for me.

Saw Mr. Holmes and the Danish Girl on the weekend. Holmes was surprisingly good.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
Watched the new Jungle Book this weekend. It was actually really good. The CG was really well done, the kid who played Mowgli knocked it out of the park, and there were some really cool scenes.
PLUS, it has Christopher Walken as the Monkey King and BILL MURRAY as Baloo; what's not to love about that? (But srsly, tons of big name cameos)

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
I was in the Dollar Tree and I grabbed Art School Confidential (FOR A DOLLAR YO). It was fairly funny movie for a bit, until it started to get really dark and the main character started doing things no person would ever do and it wasn't really believable anymore. I guess I'm not really a "Dark Comedy" fan I guess. I suppose I'm a bit simple when it comes to movies and I want to root for the characters. If they do something to compromise that, well I'm probably not enjoying the movie that much anymore. I mean, I watch pro wrestling, so I can appreciate a good face/heel turn when it happens! But there is definitely a difference between that and "character gradually slides into the shitter and never comes back".

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
- Trainspotting 1 + 2 - Angels with Dirty Faces (1938) 'I want to be Sullivan' triggered me to watch Angels with Dirty Faces. Rocky Sullivan is the main character in the film. I now understand these lyrics of the song: ROKKII SARIBAN wa okubyou datta shounentachi wa shitsubou shita hontou no koto wo shitteru no wa kare to shinpu to boku dake sa sou sa boku dake sa Rocky Sullivan was a coward. All the young boys were disappointed. The only ones who know the truth are him, the priest, and me. That's right, just me. On a side note, the main characters in the film are Rocky (Sullivan) and Jerry. They are best friends since childhood. What is funny is that I know two guys in the Philippines, who are also best friends, and whose names are also Rocky and Jerry. The intro part of 'I want to be Sullivan' '(ah, a, ah, It wasn't me, I tell you it wasn't me man. Ah, ahh, I tell ya, (you) got it wrong' *guns firing*) was not in the movie (at least I did not hear it). So I wonder where that sound fragment comes from. Also, I don't know how the lyrics part "Beneath the lights of Montparnasse I can't even begin my journey" relate to the movie. Montparnasse is a district in France, while the movie is set in the U.S. Anyway, I think the film-inspired songs of Sawao are pretty cool Next up is: Paper Moon (1973) (link to 'Angels with Dirty Faces': https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KvarkkmiMH0&t=1773s)

The German film "The Tin Drum" also seems to be referenced in the song's opening lyrics, "Buriki no taiko tataiteita".
