Boogiepop Phantom is probably my favorite anime. Cowboy Bebop is good. I also liked Haibane Renmei a lot, very cool atmosphere.

There's really, really a lot of bad anime though. So much so that it's really hard to get to the good stuff.

yeah, this is true... and a lot of the time there's stuff like dragonball z that is only good in parts or beck which is so great but has such a weird/open ended ending that you don't feel like it's really over.

what are some good anime MOVIEs? i watched ghost in the shell again recently and realized that it's really not as good as people hype it up to be. i've heard that X is a great film, but i can't find it anywhere...

Yes it is. You just don't get it. :x

Other good movies... Akira, any Miyazaki movie (especially Castle of Cagliostro, which is overlooked many times), and Grave of the Fireflies are all must-sees.

I agree about Ghost in the Shell. I've seen it half a dozen times and I like it less every time. There's nothing *that* special about it.

Do you mean Ghost in the Shell or Ghost in the Shell 2? I haven't seen the first one, I have seen the sequel (Innocence). I saw it in the theater, which was pretty special. Perhaps it was just the thrill of seeing an anime film on big screen that explains why I enjoyed it. I didn't follow much of the philosophical conversations, but the soundtrack was outstanding and the visuals were appealing. I should see it again to see if it has the same impact it had on screen.

Its true there's a lot of bad anime to sift through. Many people have ill-concieved ideas of what anime is about based on the abundance of bad anime and I don't appreciate the conclusions people draw when I mention that I like anime. I always feel like I have to justify myself somehow. Its really dumb.

I watch lots of anime. Most of the time I actually buy it, too. *glares at the punks with fancy broadband connections*

With my income, I'm usually limited to shorter series and movies- Haibane Renmei, Serial Experiments Lain, and Kino's Journey are all great. The first El Hazard OVA, the ROD OVA, and the Gunbuster OVA are cool. The Miyazaki movies, Grave of the Fireflies, Ghost in the Shell, and Akira are some fine movies.

From the shows I've seen on TV- I think Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Last Exile are awesome(no complaints from me about Exile). ROD the TV has been pretty good. The story in Full Metal Alchemist is really starting to pick up. I liked Gatekeepers 21, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi, and Boogiepop Phantom.

I can't believe no one has mentioned Paranoia Agent. I'm looking forward to seeing that along with Samurai Champloo on Adult Swim.

I'm fairly lucky, though, that I have cousin who's one of you broadband punks, even though he lives 150 miles from my boonies' shack. We're good friends, and when I visit him sometimes he's shown me some cool movies and shows that haven't come out in the states. Angel's Egg and Mind Game are two that stick out, especially if you like weird stuff. Then there's three non-Miyazaki Ghibli movies- Whisper of the Heart, Pom Poko, and My Neighbors the Yamadas. When I saw him two months ago, I watched the first few episodes of Gankutsuoh, and that show is damn cool. It's got a very distinct look that might actually turn some people off, but I loved it. It's based on the book The Count of Monte Cristo, which I haven't read, but I might now.

Anime is an amazing thing for me, if just for the fact that it's virtually the only type of film or television that can get me to watch something that's not comedy or martial arts movies.
