Man, you are so fresh and in my face! Like, everyone else is all like "<3 animu lol ^____^" and you're all like "shit sucks yo" and everyone's like "WHHA!?" Then you say it again, and again after that! It's nuts man!! Pretty much puts the "x" in "xtreme."

^ still laughing.
Grave of the Fireflies is not Miyazaki. Think about it for a minute. All of Miyazaki's movies are fantasy. Grave of the Fireflies is gritty realism.
? oh. it was in a miyazaki set that a guy i know had - my neighbor totoro, castle in the sky, porco rosso, nausicaa, mononoke, kiki's delivery service, grave of the fireflies, and one other that i forgot.

oh well. i still need to see it.

the point is your friend probably had a studio ghibli collection, not a miyazaki collection. miyazaki doesn't direct everything that comes out of studio ghibli. but it's a reasonable mistake considering that the movies have a consistent animation style.

miyazaki is king.

i liked la pyuta (castle in the sky) as well. and mononoke-hime. and i really want to see grave of the fireflies and nausicaa.
Grave of the Fireflies is not Miyazaki. Think about it for a minute. All of Miyazaki's movies are fantasy. Grave of the Fireflies is gritty realism.
After a bit of snooping, I believe I have found the culprit: Isao Takahata is the director of Grave of the Fireflies, as well as a few other movies that haven't made it to the states.

I was surprised that he also directed Pom Poko and My Neighbors the Yamadas. They're both basically comedies, and rather funny ones at that. It does seem that Takahata prefers realism in his movies, though, as My Neighbors the Yamadas is just a fun, slice-of-life look into the lives of the fairly "ordinary" Yamada family. Pom Poko, even though it deals with sentient woodland creatures, gives it characters a more mature personified tone than most Disney movies do. In that way it's somewhat comparable to Watership Down(if you've ever seen that movie), although it isn't as much a comedy. I'd probably tell you to steer clear of Pom Poko if you don't care much for overt environmentalism.
