Re: What movies have you watched recently?
I've been researching nutrition quite a lot as of recent, and I stumbled upon a low-budget documentary called Fat Head the other day. It's something of a challenge to Super Size Me, and although it was a bit campy and didn't have the budget that Super Size Me had, I have to admit that it was not only very thought provoking, but that many of its claims were actually scientifically valid. If you watched Super Size Me and enjoyed it, I'd recommend checking this documentary out to get the other side of the story, so to speak. If you watched Super Size Me, and didn't like it for whatever reason, this film does a fantastic job of tearing it apart. Very interesting and highly recommended! Here's a little more info on it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fat_Headhttp://www.imdb.com/title/tt1333994/Oh, and for those of you with Netflix, it's available through their streaming services.

Saw The Descendants recently. I recommend it. Clooney was great.

Re: What movies have you watched recently?
Watch Food Inc. Though that's more of a slaughtering animals is bad kinda movie.
I saw Food Inc. and felt that it was a pretty interesting film. And it had nothing to do with 'slaughtering animals is bad', Metal. Did you even watch it? It talked about the horribly unhealthy conditions in which farmers keep their livestock, the corruption of the modern food industry and the unhealthy additives and substitutes that are added to many of our foods; many of which we aren't aware of. Although the horrors of the modern food industry are often discussed, watching a documentary like this one does well to illustrate a lot of its problems- especially for someone like myself who was previously ambivalent and uneducated about the whole thing.
I also watched a documentary called Forks over Knives recently and found it to be nothing more than thinly-veiled Vegetarian propaganda. Shit sucked.

Damn, I haven't heard your thoughts on Morgan Spurlock before this. What's your beef with him?

Poor Donny.
I actually watched this again recently. Still hilarious. Although I apparently completely forgot about some of the odder stuff (the dream sequence, for instance).

In a word, pseudo-profundity. Super Size Me was nothing more than a hit piece against McDonald's.
So wait - there are unhealthy consequences to eating 5,000 calories a day with no exercise? Somebody make this guy a millionaire! Of course, while this is common sense, it was interesting to see such effects documented. I guess I am okay with entertaining pseudo-scientific demonstrations, as are popular in shows like Bullshit! and MythBusters.
But it wouldn't be a documentary without some sort of nonsensical propagandistic agenda. No, we need a bad guy. And so Spurlock found his scapegoat in McDonald's and fast food in general. And he fallaciously implied that the common sense results of his "experiment" are somehow evidence in support of his contention that McDonald's is in fact evil - and not to mention his support of the absurd notion that McDonald's ought to be liable for the obesity of its customers. And to top it all off, of course he couldn't help but to plug organic and vegan food while reproaching GMO foods with his girlfriend.
Moreover, I may as well just incorporate by reference the entirety of Fat Head to my post.
At least Michael Moore can be entertaining while he is being a stupid motherfucking piece of shit. But Morgan Spurlock? Who wants to live in a world where a man like that can be successful at anything? I guess anti-intellectual appeals to emotion just sell documentaries.

What were your impressions of Fat Head in particular, Sheer- about the questionable nature of the Lipid Hypothesis and the potential link between carbs and heart disease and whatnot?

Eh - I have no substantial knowledge on the matter either way, and I am not keen on taking his word for it - documentarians and journalists in general are not particularly knowledgeable or trustworthy (unless of course their work is derived from some sort of expertise, which is not the case here). It is rather his refutation of Super Size Me that I found to be compelling.
