Some of it is good, some of it is bad, all of it is way different from any Star Trek that came before, so go see it and make a decision for yourself. Nothing will ever compare to Star Trek II in the ST world, hup!

I thought the movie was amazing. Definately one of the best scifi movies in years.

Post Re: STAR TREK
I didn't really watch any of the TV shows but I enjoyed the movie a lot. The friends I was with who were more into ST seemed to be pleased with it, though. I thought Zachary Quinto (Sylar) was great as Spock. There was really only one spot near the end where I was questioning the plot (only because Kirk/Spock seemed to do something randomly and didn't communicate to each other what they were going to do after... but somehow it just works out).
I really hope this clears up a few misconceptions about how and when Spock and Kirk met, because in the original series the pilot episode had a different crew plus Spock, and at some point Kirk says they met in the academy, but then there's the episode that corresponds with the pilot featuring the original captain. I dunno, but I can't fucking wait.
Well, stuff happens in the movie that mostly fits what you're talking about.

I saw it the other day.

The best part for me was that Harold..I mean, uh, John Cho played sulu and had a pocket samurai sword. Instant badassery.

Also the guy who played Bones absolutely nailed it. Lots of fun throw-backs on his part.

No previous knowledge of or interest in Star Trek, but the movie was hell of fun. Definitely enjoyed myself.

Saw the movie last night, and it was fantastic, one all Trekkies will enjoy.
I have to say, not being a Star Trek fan at all, I had a great
time watching it and give it a 5 out of 5 fucking intergalactic stars

(SPOILER) Not for Star Trek but for another movie.
I love how the actress who played Uhura played an officer who loves going to Conventions in the
movie The Terminal.
There was a scene where she does the vulcan peace greeting then twists her wrist to reveal she
agreed to Enrique's marriage proposal.

Great movie none the less. Sorry if you haven't seen Spielbergs Terminal yet.

The only guy I know who is a real Star Trek nerd was pretty meh about the movie, which surprised me. Probably some form of nerd rage about them changing things, I suppose.

It is a pretty cheap trick to just go, "parallel universe, free license - but you already know all the characters beforehand, so you'll give us your money." That generally irks me, but Star Trek movies do tend to be a little out there plot-wise.

It was still good none the less. I mean you can't bitch about your favorite
series when it wasn't fail. It was better than seeing Dragon Ball. So many
fans were dissapointed to find that their Asian hero Goku is being played by
a white guy. In fact remember the Watchmen thread? I remember some of my friends
who read the novel were dissapointed, I was like "Fuck you guys! That was fucking great."
You cannot bitch about Star Trek, even if you know the characters and overall plot. It was
great to watch.

"Damnit I'm a Doctor not a physicist!"
I shit my pants when I heard that

I'm okay with suspending disbelief for an outlandish or cheap story sometimes. It's shallow, but sometimes it's harder to ignore laughably-bad fight scenes and special effects that one finds in the older, reputably deeper Star Trek stuff. :eh:

That's kinda the thing. If there's anything to the dichotomy between Star Wars and Star Trek, it's that SW is more or less about a superficial plot that is an engine for great fight scenes and special effects, whereas ST is primarily driven by significant plots and themes, interspersed with action scenes which exist solely to promote these things.

If I have fanbase B, and I make a really great movie that appeals to fanbase A, some people are just going to feel a little meh about it. Since I like both types of movies, I thought it was pretty cool - not necessarily a good balance, but good nonetheless. However, I think it's pretty obvious why others would be put off by it.

I might see this. I'm not much of an action movie guy save for an occasional film or two which most likely has nostalgia attached to it. As for Star Trek in general, I tried to watch an episode once and it ended up being nothing more than an excuse to bash on Jews (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferengi). It was pretty damned awful. I'd much rather watch the original trilogy of Star Wars or play any of the extended universe games than sit through Star Trek if it's anything like the episode I saw.

It's nothing like that, and I liked this more than any Star Wars movie save for the Empire Strikes Back.

The Ferengi have exactly nothing to do with Jews, nor were they intended to. Star Trek is not the kind of show to watch whilst blazed, which you clearly must have been.
