I am obsessed with the idea of writing in books, but i can never do it...books are just too sacred to me. It's on the level of...say...a catholic couple having sex in a church...While mass is in progress.

I agree that bond movies are quite lacking in a lot...plot, creative cinematography, an underlying message, and quite often, good acting, and are therefore, not what i call in general "good movies"...however, they're still entertaining...the plethora of explosions, sweet spy gear, bond chicks, and bond suave makes them at least something to watch.
But besides that, i don't see how you could really compare Battle Royale to Bond (not saying you have to like the movie at all..i just think it's on a different level)...I mean...BR actually has a rather good plot imo, and a rather meaningful underlying message...though admittedly it is rather lacking in the cinematography department, and a decent bit of it is overacted...but hey...they're pretty young...gotta learn sometime.

Actually, Battle Royale has really good cinematography for a later Fukusaku film. Battle Royale II is a fucking joke in that respect, though.

I have had this movie on my computer for weeks, but finally watched it two nights ago at school on a random impulse...
I was fucking blown away!
At first, I was like "ah, this is some funny stuff, haha, cool"
but toward the end, despite all of the comic scenes and all of the blood and gore, there was a serious message behind this film...
The final 15 minutes or so fucking moved me like very few movies ever have...maybe it is because of my circumstances (just graduating hs, from a boarding school no less) and moving on with life, but this movie truly defines the meaning of true friend (something that is hard to grasp at times) and the end basically says "Live your fucking life to the fullest because it could end at any time"
Overall, best Japanese film I have seen...for me it was funny, gory, sad and moving all at the same time...
I gotta find the ending credits song, anyone know the artist?
Run!
PS: I know I sound nuts right now...

"Shizuka na Hibi no Kaidan wo" by Dragon Ash. Great group. You can find a download of it somewhere on MySpace Music (just type the group name in, that's what I did).

 Re: Battle Royale
I've seen it, and I agree that it's amazing. I really don't understand why people say it's too gruesome or horrible; there's nothing in it that really exceeds the norm of a thriller movie. I loved it because the violence was portrayed very well, and in very abstract ways.

For me, it wasn't that it was gruesome or horrible in a gory way (which is what I think you're referring to), but it wasn't tremendously enjoyable just because it was kind of hopelessly sad. I haven't really ever put myself into a movie in this way any other time, so I guess it's good in that respect. But I wouldn't want to watch it again. Maybe because I'm a pussy lol

 Re: Battle Royale
Reading through this thread, I was surprised at the amount of people who hadn't seen it until recently. I saw it quite a while ago, and my response was a lot like most of yours(Awesome, HOLY SHIT, ect.).
I also noticed that someone posted a long time ago that the book is better than the movie. This is true. The book is much more detailed and the characters seem much more distinct from one another. That's not to say that you can't tell the differences in the movie, but the book wins because of the simple fact that you can't see the characters in front of your eyes. You have to create their appearance and personality based on the details that are presented. Same with the island, your only reference for that is the crude map in the front of the book. It's like this with most good books, actually. It's what makes them so good.
Another thing: the leader of the Program, (Sakamochi in the book, I don't remember if he was named in the movie) is probably one of the most evil villans in any story that I have ever read. My god.

 Re: Battle Royale
Man, I just watched it again, and it's still awesome.
If I have some cash left after I buy my college books D;, I'll definitely look into buying this one.
