I think it's a great movie, with many different layers. That it could inspire such serious topical discussion probably proves it.
People in dire situations can sometimes eschew rational thought(especially those with younger minds). War, famine, and poverty can cause tremendous tension and unhealable rifts, even among families. Most of all, lives can be lost in the most shameful and pointless of ways.

Completly agree with your last point, Elixir. Sometimes, people don't opperate at their best when in a state panic and fear. Also, in the higher degrees of choas is when you start to see people's true nature. Not just the selfishness, but also seeing people willing to lend a hand and such, the 'togetherness'. Whats even sadder is the fact that people face this reality every day in our times, in more dire situations.
Altough, in this case, I saw it more as a 'wrong place, wrong time' type of prespective, then just lead to 'shit happens'. I'm not questioning the character's motives since I've never been in a middle of a full blown war in my front yard and can't say I would have done things differently or not. Its just a matter of what options you have and the chances you're willing to take.
After all the protesting I've seen this past week about nuceluar arms that took place during the 60th anniversary of when Enola Gay droped the bombs in Japan, its nice to see that today people are understanding the effects of that event and the positive nature it can create.

i'd say most of the time people don't operate well in panic. unless they're prepared or used to it. stampedes and car accidents come to mind. for instance, if a tire blows out, and you know how your car handles, then you can probably get off the road safely. but if you flip out, you'll probably swerve off into oncoming traffic or something.

that's exactly what i thought of the aunt- she would not have been nearly as mean in better times. on the surface, anyway.
