Re: What Television Shows Have You Watched Recently?
Hmm, I am terribad about finishing/keeping up with shows (except Game of Thrones, because Game of fuckin' Thrones). Have not finished Marco Polo which I mentioned way above... nor Breaking Bad... oh well, now checking out Into the Badlands, awesome-looking martial arts show - first episode was a little weird story-wise but the fighting sequences are sweeeet.

Re: What Television Shows Have You Watched Recently?
So right, just saw it (Mr. Robot) and erm here is a short 'review' in white, spoiler alert. I happen to see Fight Club again the other day with a friend of mine who hadn't seen it yet, anyway. I think Mr. Robot is really influenced by Fight Club in a lot of ways. Obviously, the alter ego/psychoses stuff. Then the rebelling against corporate culture stuff. Then there is Tyrell Wellick... Tyrell is a kind of anagram of Tyler (Durden).. could just be coincidence. Then they literally play 'Where is my mind' by The Pixies (piano cover) in Mr. Robot, in I think the episode before the last one, just like they play the original song at the end of Fight Club. The protagonists do jobs they both hate or despise. In short, I see a lot of parallels, but yeah, mostly the first two points. Haha, and also.. in Fight Club, 'Tyler' threatens a young man at a gas station, about how he is wasting his life and what his dreams are and that he should pursue that dream etc. ..and damn. in Mr. Robot, we have Bill of course. Poor Bill. He gets scoffed at by Elliot how worthless his life is and that nobody cares for him. But I feel sorry for Bill, unlike the man from the gas station, he does not get any advice, just got asked to call his superior, making him feel even more worthless Poor Bill
Nice, I'm glad you enjoyed it! (Spoilers in my reply as well) Yeah, the creator of the show was pretty open about how Fight Club was a big inspiration of the show: "I think the nod or the acknowledgement with “Where Is My Mind” at the end of episode 9 was, yes, in part letting the audience know that we’re very much aware that Fight Club was an inspiration, but at the same time, we make no apologies about it." (From http://www.ew.com/article/2015/09/03/mr ... ion-finale) Also, this may be sacrilege, but while I really like Mr. Robot, I really didn't like Fight Club much at all. Basically, I feels like Mr. Robot has a lot more empathy, especially for people with mental illnesses, than Fight Club ever had. This article sums up my feelings pretty well: http://www.pastemagazine.com/articles/2 ... t-for.html

How is that? I was waiting to see how many seasons would come out to watch because I expected it to be binge-worthy, but kind of forgot to follow up on it and see where they're at with things. :x

Fucking great, man. Not to be missed. After Breaking Bad, I had astronomical hopes for this show, and it miraculously did not disappoint. The team working on this are true artists.

Re: What Television Shows Have You Watched Recently?
Just watched the first episode of Mr. Robot after seeing the "Fuck Society" video clip on facebook.
To be frank, I'm really impressed at the quality of the show, at least in regard to the first episode (since it's not quite that uncommon for one director to handle a pilot of a show, or one episode and pass it off to another.) The script can be a little canned and angsty and I feel like it's really trying to tug at our generation's angst, but besides that, I think the film direction was absolutely fantastic. There were a lot of subtleties that really did a great job of adding characterization with camera shots focusing on characters' possessions/interests, and there was a lot of cool angles the director used to emphasize that the main character is off-center. Literally.
Although I'm talking out my ass about this, I think the main character does a great job portraying a schizoid(?) character. It's also got Christian Slater in it, which is a good sign, but I haven't really seen to much action from him yet. The only person I'm kinda on the fence about is his potential love interest, but I've seen both good and bad moments from her, so we'll see.
I'd definitely be interested in watching more of the show, if for the direction alone.
Although I'm talking out my ass about this, I think the main character does a great job portraying a schizoid(?) character.
I'm not exactly qualified to talk either, but the thing that stuck out the most to me was how he (and the show itself) portrayed the main character with a really intimate sense of empathy. Mental assessments aside, he's obviously an outsider and a social outcast. And instead of either (a) mocking him, (b) glorifying him, or (c) making him an emotionless machine, they just opt for a very simple approach: he's constantly telling you what's going on inside his head. He's very frank and straightforward, discussing his secrets and feelings very matter-of-factly.
Overall, I feel like the show did a very good job of developing its characters in very humanizing ways: no one (from what I remember) is really a black-and-white caricature or a shallow stereotype. I felt invested and interested in the lives of pretty much every major character on the show. That's not something I can say for a lot of other shows.

Stop whatever the fuck you're doing and go watch Stranger Things on Netflix.

Not life-changing, legendary, revolutionary, or perfect, but certainly one of the best shows in production right now, and a 10/10 in terms of enjoyability regardless of carefully considered critical opinion (after which I'd give it an8/10). Gonna be perpetually looking forward to new seasons, as with Fargo.
