I've been hearing a lot of good reviews for that show from friends who watched it, I'll have to put it on my list. Watching season 4 of Wilfred now, followed by True Detective when that's over, probably.
season 4 of Wilfred.
How is that? I felt like the show jumped the shark after S1 or 2 when it faked the finale cliffhanger and stopped being about Ryan discovering his own psychotic break from reality and more on gags and running with Wilfred being definitely real.

I actually didn't really get that feeling from it. My interpretation is that Wilfred's seeming increase in "realness" is related to Ryan's mental health spiraling downwards, and they really start playing with the blur of reality and his crazy a lot more through season 3 and into season 4 (just watched the first ep of 4 so far, though). I'm still enjoying it, for sure.

Really not what I expected to get myself into, but I'm loving Downton Abbey. Sometimes you just need some melodrama. The aspects of a culture undergoing change, especially as pertains to women, is interesting to me. Also Maggie Smith is awesome.

Also checking out Marco Polo. I'm excited, a possibly good show about Asian history, with some martial arts action?! And some white guy.

I've been watching Gravity Falls and this show is absolutely stupendous. It's as good as, maybe better than, Adventure Time.

I like AT for its general weirdness, its world, and its oddly-compelling story, and while it's funny, the humor is lower down the list for me. However, Gravity Falls is drop-dead hilarious, it's the funniest thing I've experienced in years. Besides that, it's got excellent animation and a great art style, awesome characters, great plots... really I can't say enough good stuff about the show.

Another one I watched a little while ago was Over The Garden Wall - it's a ten-episode miniseries (each episode being about ten minutes long) and it was also very good. Beautiful art and music, and a great story - hits a lot of the same notes as Gravity Falls actually, but a lot of people also have said it's very Miyazaki-esque, so if that's your thing you should check it out.

Recently finished the first season of Black Mirror. Wonderfully dark and incredibly creative.
As long as you like peering into the dystopian future that will surely befall us all, you should check it out.

Also, Over the Garden Wall looks quite good. I'll be adding that to my shortlist.

I just finished rewatching Avatar: the Last Airbender. Was waiting the whole time for the episode with the whole "Zuko here!" bit, was not disappointed. Probably one of the very best tv shows I've ever seen, to be honest.

I agree with this wholeheartedly. When I was back home a couple years ago, I was chilling at my friend from high school's house and we were just watching some Avatar when his older sister + friends walked in and started laughing at us for watching a "cartoon."

I was like, "And what the hell do YOU watch? Jersey Shore?"

That shut them the hell right up.

:hmph:
I'm on Season 3 of The Wonder Years. While it's not "bad" or anything, it just doesn't have the same "oomph" as the first season, but it's still really good. I'll give the series 8.5/10 so far.
To jump back on this, I've finally picked up Wonder Years again after...3(!?) years. I take back what I said about the third season not having the same oomph...well, actually, I don't remember the first and second seasons so well anymore, but there are definitely episodes with some serious catharsis going on...and that's one of the things I enjoy the most about this show. Television to me lately has been so formulaic, it's easy to see where the episode is going to go, especially with sitcoms, but with The Wonder Years, it doesn't necessarily go that route. It's the story of a kid growing up and his growing pains...and he makes some pretty big fuckups.

At times it's a little painful to watch his fuckups, but it's really genuine how Kevin makes decisions and has to learn from them.

Oh yeah, since I haven't posted in this thread in a while, I've recently watched:
Portlandia
Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown
Twilight Zone
Regular Show
Game of Thrones

Man I forgot about The Wonder Years. I used to watch reruns of that, like, 10 years ago. It was kind of endearing in a weird, reflective way. I also need to watch more Regular Show – I really liked the first season, but I just dropped the ball and haven't watched more since then.

So here's what I've been enamored with recently, in no particular order:

Rick and Morty
Steven Universe
Mr. Robot

I could go on and on about each of these shows individually, but I'll leave it up to the thread... has anyone else watched these shows?

(GR, if you see this, I know you would especially get a kick out of Steven Universe, if you're not aware of it already. ;) )

Rick and Morty is pretty great, and I've heard a lot of good things about Mr. Robot. What's got you hooked on that one?

Man, where do I even begin...

The thing that makes Mr. Robot so fascinating for me is that it's all about demonstrating how systems can be manipulated and exploited based on how much information you can reveal — the more you understand something, the more likely you are to discover its weaknesses and vulnerabilities. And not only does it demonstrate this through events in the plot, but it also does this by manipulating you, the viewer. The main character is the "narrator" because you, the viewer, are an imaginary person he has created in his mind. You see almost all of the world and the events taking place in it through him, and so you're never quite sure what's actually happening and what is merely his interpretation of reality. As a result, you're never quite sure what's going to happen next in this show.

It also does a remarkable job of making the world it portrays feel lifelike — otherwise, the unreliable narrator device wouldn't be quite so unnerving, I feel. The characters are all astonishingly nuanced and complex, almost like you could believe they were real people with real emotions and real life stories. On its own, the story seems completely ridiculous, almost to the point of tin-foil hat absurdity, but it's portrayed using such believable and lifelike people and events that you can almost sort of imagine the story actually taking place in reality... which makes it both really unnerving, but also addictively fascinating.

And finally, one of the most important things for me personally is that it's by far the most realistic portrayal of hacker culture that I have ever seen in the mainstream media. And I don't just mean "hacking scenes that are technically accurate" (even though it has those too) — I mean, like, it's the most realistic portrayal of the actual hacker subculture I've ever seen in any kind of media. Most of the important characters you see in this show come from the fringes of society: outcasts, loners, people with strange interests and mannerisms and ethics — but they all share a really intense drive to poke at everything, figure out how things work, deconstruct them, and learn how they can influence and control them. And in reality, this is what hacking is actually all about (and what mainstream media has glossed over for literally decades). It's just really refreshing, especially for someone like me with my particular interests in technology, to see a show that is so dedicated to accurately representing the groups of people they're trying to portray.

Post Re: What Television Shows Have You Watched Recently?
So right, just saw it (Mr. Robot) and erm here is a short 'review' in white, spoiler alert.

I happen to see Fight Club again the other day with a friend of mine who hadn't seen it yet, anyway. I think Mr. Robot is really influenced by Fight Club in a lot of ways. Obviously, the alter ego/psychoses stuff. Then the rebelling against corporate culture stuff. Then there is Tyrell Wellick... Tyrell is a kind of anagram of Tyler (Durden).. could just be coincidence. Then they literally play 'Where is my mind' by The Pixies (piano cover) in Mr. Robot, in I think the episode before the last one, just like they play the original song at the end of Fight Club. The protagonists do jobs they both hate or despise. In short, I see a lot of parallels, but yeah, mostly the first two points. Haha, and also.. in Fight Club, 'Tyler' threatens a young man at a gas station, about how he is wasting his life and what his dreams are and that he should pursue that dream etc. ..and damn. in Mr. Robot, we have Bill of course. Poor Bill. He gets scoffed at by Elliot how worthless his life is and that nobody cares for him. But I feel sorry for Bill, unlike the man from the gas station, he does not get any advice, just got asked to call his superior, making him feel even more worthless :( Poor Bill
