Started watching Katanagatari. Its art style is different (chibi characters but beautiful hand-painted backgrounds...) and I'm really digging it.

Its OST is fantastic. It's got really really nice orchestral pieces and overall it somehow reminds me of SaGa Frontier 2. Srsly, check this song out:

This is the first anime in a while that I've seen that doesn't feel completely rehashed from other anime...even though it is, but it knows it is, and it's okay with that and it makes me okay with that too.

Dragon Ball Super started in Japan. It isn't bad.

I'm following it through Qaaman for now. I might watch it eventually.

The fansub I ran across was pretty mehtastic, though, which is why I prefer waiting for professionally done subtitles to watch things. Really simple things, like "yasumi ka?" (Oh, no school today, huh?) being translated SEMI-literally as "Oh, the day of rest." I'll hold off, but the animation was pretty great. Other than Gohan somehow becoming even more pussified than he already was in later DBZ eps.

Eh, I guess I'll take what I can get. The quickest fansubs will always be more of a straight translation than a localization. I think most people who have watched hundreds of fansubs will understand that, but Dragon Ball fans just hungry for more content will probably find such flat dialogue weird.

It's not even "straight translation," it's lacking a fundamental understanding of the meaning of Japanese language by trying to force dictionary "definitions" in place of actual knowledge...kind of like all my early pillows lyric translations, lol. I guess I'm just absolutely confused at how there are people who manage to be respected enough in the fansub community to be part of any project with THAT low a level of Japanese.

But being a spoilsport aside, hell yeah to new Dragon Ball, for real. Considering the way that they went back with DB Kai to trim down DBZ into something without fluff, I have high hopes for how this one could go, if they can keep the lessons they learned from that in mind.

So...Katanagatari had an ending badass as fuck. I would've given the show a 9/10 (which is an extremely high rating for me,) but I'm knocking it down to an 8 just for like the last minute or so that really pissed me off.

In other news, I started watching Folktales from Japan. Folktales have kinda always interested me, as they really give you an insight into one's culture, and it gives you common ground to have funny conversations with nationals. I'd recommend taking a look at it if you're weaboo and (still) interested in Japan.

I realized I wasn't a weeaboo anymore when last night I was reading a fan scanlation of a manga and becoming actively upset whenever they opted not to translate weeb words like "baka" and "ecchi." Like fuck you guy

I mean, even at the peak of my weeabooery, I feel like I would prefer a translation to be done properly. Those types give us other weebs a bad name desu dasu.

Seems like Dragonball Super is going with the plot of the first movie (Battle of the Gods) to start out with, so there's no pressing need to watch the films to watch the new series.

I'll be interested to see what differences there will be between the film and the anime.

When I can get around to it, I'm watching Zeta Gundam.

When we can make time, my partner and I are watching Escaflowne. A long while back, I watched the first DVD or two - she's seen the whole thing. Some pretty sick 90's anime nostalgia, and the OST is by Yoko Kanno (it's incredible, big surprise). You got your fantasy, pretty boys, romance, big fighting robots. I'm digging it.

Does anyone have somesome other good 90s fantasy/romance/adventures reccs? Bonus points for quality soundtracks
