Trying to explain my relationship with anime is so fucking hard. On one hand I just want to be cynical and say, "Yea, anime always sucked ass grapes. I just grew up." But on the other hand I'm screaming, "Wait Jeremy! Remember Cowboy Bebop? Remember Ode to Joy's perfect placement in Evangelion? Remember M-M-M-M-Mikiru Beamuuu? Anime can be done right, Jeremy-kun!" Two extreme thoughts perfectly balanced in my brain, cancelling each other out. Bizarre.

You guys mention movies and television, but I can instantly list off tons of movies shows that I adore. That just isn't the case for anime. However, this is almost undoubtedly extreme bias. Plus I don't even live in Japan, where such a comparison would be much more appropriate.

Well, anime is in a weird state. It's the fanservice and pandering that keeps it alive aside from the shounen jump series, because a lot of the shows Western fans like don't exactly sell well (a lot of the stuff Aplaca listed.) Then you have the hardcore, jizz stains on their boxers crowd that those shows pander to and they're the ones buying enough of those shows to keep them afloat. Them and fujoshi, which are the female equivalent (except they all about gay dudes dat look like ladiez.) Either my tastes have adapted or I've started watching enough to not mind certain pandering series, but there are still some that are just like... what. Like, for example, last year, my cousin and I were joking about anime series that were coming out (kind of like I did in my previous post) and he talked about one where it was like "Okay, okay, so, this guy is a tank mechanic and it's set in wartime Japan. Except the tanks? They're little girls. And they want his dick." and then this show that's about little girl tank mechanics called Girls Und Panzer, I think, came out this season. It's just kind of like... wat.

Also, at Aplaca, I went through a phase where I hated 99% of animu, save for the stuff I used to watch. Stopped watching anything new for about a year and a half or two years. Eventually, got back into it, and now I just pick up a show that sounds interesting or is recommended to me, watch for 3 episodes to give it a shot, and if I don't like it, I just drop it. That way there's not too much time invested in it, but also, if it's a slow series, I can find out whether or not it looks like the payoff is going to be worth it within those 3 episodes.

Also, as for the movies/TV thing, that's also because there are a lot more films and television shows produced/released compared to anime.

Eh, it's like any other entertainment. You gotta look hard for the good stuff.

I'm guessing you've seen stuff like Ghost in the Shell, so I'm not going to bother listing something like that. I think the second incarnation of FMA is vastly superior to the original (though Michiru's OST is probably better overall), since it stays true the the manga (and doesn't go off on a weird... tangent towards the end). FMA: Brotherhood is definitely one of my favorite series.

^ Seconding the recommendations for Kino's Journey and Now and Then, Here and There. Both are kick-ass shows. Also, check out the first season of Big O, if you've never gotten around to it.

If you're at all into mecha, I could recommend some good stuff.

I still have a lingering irrational hate for Big O from my childhood. God I hate the theme song. Every time it would come on on Toonami I'd think, "What the fuck.. this isn't Dragonball Z."

I hated Big O when I was a kid. But upon re-watching it recently, I actually enjoyed it a lot.

Anyways, yeah. If you were going to watch at least one of those shows Aplaca, I seriously recommend Now and Then, Here and There. That might actually be my favorite anime of all time. 13 episodes long, and it packs a big punch.

I dunno. I liked the original, Dragon Ball a lot. Z is a fun watch up until the end of the Cell saga. After that, I don't give a FUH.
