Post hybrid rainbow analysis?
hey, can i get an analysis on hybrid rainbow from a japanese speaker?

i'm gonna try to translate/transpose/re-write it into a performable in english version (i know... sacrelige...).

i just want a better understanding of what it's about... something along the lines about how even though the past shits on me i look forward to the future? the translation is really cryptic (har har accidental pun).

well... i guess i could discuss my translation of it. if you're asking for a native japanese speaker, there aren't really any that hang around here as far as i know.

but i don't try to interpret too much when i translate.

*does the analysis off of Terra's translation* basically.....it's kinda like a motivation song......they're stuck on an island, a ship comes by but skips em.....but they're feeling some sorta thing....and they're waiting for that day....ya know, the whole every dog has it's day thing....

so basically.....it's about how even when life throws ya lemons.....you just gotta wait till it throws you a box of cookies or something good like that XD

i looked at my translation again. i couldn't find too many places where i did significant interpretation.

Kitto mada / Genkai nante konna mon janai / Konnan janai

it's literally: 'surely this is still not the limit, it (the limit) isn't like this'. i put: 'Surely / We can still go farther / Farther than this'.

PURIZUMU wo hasande, te wo futta kedo

here i assumed he was signalling the ship- holding up the prism and wiggling it around a little. but, well, 'i held up my prism and wiggled it around' ain't too poetic. i suppose i could have done something better there in retrospect...

anyway, i don't think that takes too much away from the song.

i think it's about just not giving up. it's not just waiting until something good happens, it's just knowing that however hopeless things seem now, you've still got another chance tomorrow, you can still keep going.

now, here's something else to think about. the kanji the pillows used for 'hybrid rainbow' on their wristbands mean 'spotted/blemished rainbow' (the kanji for hybrid is completely different). so how would you interpret that?

that's really interesting.

hybrid rainbow, funny bunny, and swanky street are all about not giving up. well, funny bunny's not quite the same, but still.

i always think of this song as one with a really hopeful, yet still saddened song. listen to several different live versions of the song if you want to figure out what emotion Yamanaka is trying to convey. the emotions he conveys can tell you things that the words can't.

for example he starts out softly, but if you just look at the words it seems as if he is being matter-of-fact rather than sad.

and on the "can you FEEL?" he puts so much feeling into the phrase and the chorus that follows. if you do an english version, try and stay within the same structure of the rhythm, and keep that emotion. after all, the way it makes you feel is what makes it such a great song.

slightly off topic: one time i was goofing around and sang to swanky street, ad-libbing it into english as i went. lol

I'm going to make a comment about Hybrid Rainbow, but you have to remember first that I was thinking of this as a lovesong after seeing a translation of the lyrics. The singer was on an island with someone- a metaphor for being isolated and trying to connect with this person in a way that re-kindled a relationship that used to be pretty close.

Anyway, at the time I first read the translation, I started wondering about the phrase "hybrid rainbow"....

...and it struck me that PERHAPS this was based on a true fact: that no one sees the same rainbow as another person.

This is really true; because of the optics, unless your eyes are in exactly the same location as another eye, you'll see a different color refracted from the same raindrop as you'd see if your eye was shifted a few inches away. Thus- you can't see the SAME rainbow as someone else. Your's is not produced by the same droplets in the same way.

So I was thinking: does he mean that he wants to merge with this person so *completely* that he actually sees through her eyes? And she through his? So they actually DO see the same rainbow?

You have to admit: a sentiment like that is pretty romantic.

I'm probably way off base...but that's what it sounded like to me.

dude, awesome.

i was leaning more towards the "don't give up" interpretation though. with a truly good song, it will have a special meaning to every person that is truly willing to listen to it.

i can't see that being what was running through sawao's mind when he wrote that song.
