Strange chameleon is about not fitting in and being rejected by society...duh.
from the translated lyrics i have read, its a love song.
It looked to me like it was a come-on to some girl, but from the guy's hind-brain. The reptilian brain. So naturally he was dressed like the inmate of an insane asylum....again, pretty damned romantic.

I mean, you might as well let it all hang out, right? Let her see just how low-down and dirty your libido really is?

How can she not fall in love with that?

I mean, it's always worked for me......

lolz. dude, i loved the swanky street pv. especially when sawao started jamming in the swing. and the streets, though i wish there had been a little more of that.

ok... the hybrid rainbow comment was pretty farfetched.. but this strange chameleon stuff is just ridiculous craig. =P

it's pretty obvious that it's a love song about a guy who loves a girl a lot but can't bring himself to change in order to be with her. he's a strange chameleon because he can't change... he's stuck in the colors that he was born in and can't be with this girl consequently.

Yeah, like I said- I haven't see a translation of the lyrics, so I was just projecting my own fantasy on the video. As for Hybrid Rainbow, again- that was just the science geek in me coming out.

But you have to admit: in a society where girls were going on and on about how romantic is was that some Japanese dude killed and ate his girlfriend so he could truely become "one" with her, my fantasies about the meaning of the lyrics isn't THAT far-fetched....

and of course he doesn't want to try using man-made means to fix his problem.

your hybrid rainbow theory is certainly interesting...

but i'm still stuck on the blemished rainbow thing. i'm convinced the kanji they used on the wristbands is probably closer to sawao's intent. that perhaps they have a tarnished, imperfect rainbow, but they've still got a rainbow (made by the prism they're using to signal a ship) and they've still got hope.

or something. we'll just have to ask sawao.

Thank you SO MUCH for the Strange Chameleon lyrics! I love that song, and ESPECIALLY Manabe-san's guitar break. I'm trying to learn Japanese, so it's really nice to have romji and English side-by-side...plus I like to sing it!

I'm not sure my take on the video is mutually exclusive with the lyrical content- being a chameleon that can't blend sure seems to be the intent of the lyrics, but it's not unusual for a video to go off in another direction. In this case it may be a subliminal message to be talking about reptiles in the first place...sort of a tacit admission that he's being driven by something other than higher brain functions. That sort of honesty is sometimes very appealing....but then emotional risk always is. There is some allusion to isolation in the lyrics, but the video takes that to a literal place with the "white room" and lack of color.

It just feels like a slightly insane place- an asylum, and who knows if it was his choice or the outside world's. My take was that we all have a place like that in our heads, and we normally keep our libidos there, out of sight until it's time to let it out. Certain kinds of insanity are quite enjoyable....like those moments you share with another person....or your favorite sock puppet, if you're a real misfit. Squirt.

I think it was Kathy Matea or K.T. Oslin that did a song called "Come Next Monday (I'm Gonna Give Up On You)" that had a video of her as the Bride of Frankenstein...talk about a novel interpretation....

And then there was "Don't Come Around Here No More" by Tom Petty, with him dressed up as the Mad Hatter at a Tea Party in Wonderland...so it's not unusual that a music video is wildly divergent from the lyrics per se.

But I haven't seen your comments about Hybrid Rainbow- what do you mean about "imperfect" rainbows? I'm not married to my concept- I was just clutching at straws....

EDIT: Oh, I see what you mean! Yeah....that rings true....

(*sigh*) now if I could just read kanji......

You know, maybe the rainbow is imperfect because the two individual rainbows aren't merged very well....it sort of fits with both interpretations...two people trying to get it together, and muddying each others colors....but still trying to get into perfect registry to get a beautiful blend? A perfect hybrid rainbow? And they don't have it yet, because they've still got issues they're hassling with, so they can't see things through each other's eyes very well. They can't gain the other's perspective.

The more I think about it, the more I think those notions aren't mututally exclusive.

Who knows if that's what Yamanaka was thinking at the time....probably not, but it's just another way of looking at it.
